Odometer stopped working!!
#1

Hi guys,

So this is weird. Just yesterday I noticed that my milage counter had stopped working. I glanced up at the odometer and kept my eye on it for a couple of miles. As I had thought, it was dead! I tried resetting the counter using the 'vent' button, which worked, but both instruments didn't spring to life. All the other instruments seem to work just fine.

I need to troubleshoot this and get it fixed ASAP for obvious reasons. I'm guessing that I haven't driven more than 5-6 miles since the odometer went down.

I searched the forums but couldn't find anything specific. Any ideas?

cheers,

milton

You need a new odometer gear.
Do a search fir that and the DIY well come up.

It's a cheap, easy and common repair.

On a similar topic, my odometer and trip counter both work fine, but I cannot reset the trip odometer.

Is that a mechanically linked reset button? Or is that some sort of electro-mechanical switch that trips a solenoid or something like that?

John...the button on the vent panel pushes a switch that in turn activates a solenoid and sometimes it will "fall down" and the vent button will not push in correctly. This happens most commonly when not reassembling the vent trim properly and assuming that's what your problem is, it's a very easy fix. I believe there is a picture of that very switch on here somewhere - maybe check the above referenced threads that mark pointed out if you haven't done so. Swing by if you want or we can do it on the 19th if you're able to make it for the "detail day".

Awesome, thanks Darryl. If I don't find the problem and fix it by then, I'll take you up on that on the 19th.

Same think happened to me. I tried the gear fix on my own and while my old one had a broken tooth, it did not fix the problem. The folks at Palo Alto the link below fixed me up, very reasonable and good to work with.

Its under the "DIY" section................"Trip Odometer is broke" . Theres a pic there of how to keep the switch in its place.

Hi guys,

Now all I need to know is which gear to order. On the KLA Industries website, when I pick 968, I'm given an option for 12 teeth, 16 or 17. Which one?

cheers,

Here's a picture of my speedo when I had it disassembled the first time to diagnose this problem. Much to my surprise, my gears were not broken! By the way, I count 15 teeth on this gear. It is the small yellow one that breaks.

As a side note, I ended up having to send my instrument cluster in (North Hollywood Speedometer) and the problem was electrical, not mechanical. When I talked to the guys about my repair, they mentioned that the gear I had in there wasn't exactly the right one...I had replaced the one pictured anyway as a diagnostic test and forgot to remove it so it got sent it in with an aftermarket gear installed. They replaced the gear, fixed the circuit board and even sent my "wrong" gear back with the cluster!

Hope this photo helps.

Hey guys, I am having a similar issue with my 968. The odometer stopped working and I sent the instrument cluster off to be repaired. They said it was repaired and tested. After re-installing it and driving, it seemed to work for only about 100km then stopped working again. If it tapped on the dash it would start again but quit. Any chance it could be the gear again or possibly an electrical issue?

Don't you have a guarantee on the repair? It sucks, but maybe you could send it back and have them answer the question for you (and us).

Did they inspect the plastic gear on the motor shaft? If that cracks, the gears will not turn reliably. I fixed a similar problem on a Mercedes odometer years ago with a drop of superglue.
