No odometer or trip odometer
#1

Another surprise. Took the car to get a coolant leak investigated. Thought it was the Temp Control valve as there was a spot about the size of a half dollar on the floor next to the pass front tire. Long and short of it was that somewhere in this cars life, somebody pulled the fan shroud and when putting it back in, used too long of screws which went right into the core. Probably a bunch of stop leak in there started to give out. $600 later..........new radiator. But driving home, I noticed that while the speedometer works great, the odometer and trip odometer had stopped working.
I've read the posts before and it appears I have a speedo gear job in front of me. Do we all agree with that diagnosis?
I'm also going to do the instrument light, aluminum foil upgrade while that thing is out of there.

Yep, it is the the gear in the speedo. Very easy fix.
There are also some good right ups around on how fix the cluster lighting.

You should be able to everything in an afternoon.

just go to suset, pelican or paragon.
A new gear will last another 10 years.

Yes, lots of decent write ups here about the gears and the refurbishing of the light tubes. I've done a few cars and PorscheDude is right about an afternoon's worth of time. The only problem may be spending all the time to take everything out and finding out the your odometer gear is not broken...if that's the case, then you're looking at sending it in for repair. Evidently, there are some parts of the circuitry that get finicky and the problem is actually electrical as opposed to mechanical. I ended up sending mine to North Hollywood Speedometer and it's been perfect ever since. They requested the entire cluster and even fixed the erratic temp guage while they had it.

I hope I'm wrong too...the gear is simple to do once you get to it...like lots of other things on our cars.

It is the sending unit that attaches to the transaxle.

But 98% sure it is the gear.
