John...the button on the vent panel pushes a switch that in turn activates a solenoid and sometimes it will "fall down" and the vent button will not push in correctly. This happens most commonly when not reassembling the vent trim properly and assuming that's what your problem is, it's a very easy fix. I believe there is a picture of that very switch on here somewhere - maybe check the above referenced threads that mark pointed out if you haven't done so. Swing by if you want or we can do it on the 19th if you're able to make it for the "detail day".

Same think happened to me. I tried the gear fix on my own and while my old one had a broken tooth, it did not fix the problem. The folks at Palo Alto the link below fixed me up, very reasonable and good to work with.

Here's a picture of my speedo when I had it disassembled the first time to diagnose this problem. Much to my surprise, my gears were not broken! By the way, I count 15 teeth on this gear. It is the small yellow one that breaks.
As a side note, I ended up having to send my instrument cluster in (North Hollywood Speedometer) and the problem was electrical, not mechanical. When I talked to the guys about my repair, they mentioned that the gear I had in there wasn't exactly the right one...I had replaced the one pictured anyway as a diagnostic test and forgot to remove it so it got sent it in with an aftermarket gear installed. They replaced the gear, fixed the circuit board and even sent my "wrong" gear back with the cluster!
Hope this photo helps.

Did they inspect the plastic gear on the motor shaft? If that cracks, the gears will not turn reliably. I fixed a similar problem on a Mercedes odometer years ago with a drop of superglue.
