Engine compartment light
#1

Missing the bulb in the engine compartment light (the one attached to the front of the hood), not sure where it went. PET lists two bulbs: 900 631 106 90 is a 10W and 999 631 106 90 is a 3W.  I think it's the 10W but does anyone know for sure?

I leave mine out, I believe there have been cases of them overheating and bubbling the paint if left on for too long.

Really, they don't shut off when the engine compartment is closed?  That would be a problem.  I could see dead batteries as well.

I replaced mine with an LED one. I still had the incandescent one (burnt out), so I just matched the size...

Works great and very little power draw if I leave the hood open too long.

Do you remimber where you got the LED one, that would be a better solution?

Yes, they do shut off, and I would go with the LED one if I was going to put one back in.

I went to the garage and pulled it out to find the brand and model:

Phillips O5H11 12V

Not a bad idea, the plastic housing of mine has partially molten. The pins that hold the microswitch had broken off, so the bulb was on for god knows how long. Even the bulb itself is black on the inside, but still works. Tough little bastard :-)

That little plastic thing with the two pins is the reason the light stays on, it's still available from OPC $1

See all the neat stuff you can learn on this forum?  I'm still surprised by the stuff I didn't know, although I shouldn't be by now.   When you open the hood and raise it the light should come on, magic I guess. If I'm reading the wiring diagram correctly, looks  like It's wired into the circuit that controls the hood open warning indicator. Same fuse with the luggage compartment light,  The assembly is still available from Porsche. If the wires are corroded that will need to be repaired also.

The hood lock touches a microswitch when you close it. This makes the light go out. When for some reason the switch isn't made, the light stays on. Can you spell 'new battery'? :-)

That micro switch is also linked to the alarm,

Awwesome idea - of course! - LED replacement for this light - probably for the cabin light and cargo cubby, too. I disconnected my hood light because of the melted plastic problem. Many thanks for the idea and reminder to do something about that.

OK - a follow up. I can't find that number in a Philips lamp. It's interesting - the PET lists 4 lamps total - I think - three 10W and one 3W.

superbrightleds.com shows the following as a replacement - two choices in 44mm festoon style lamp.

Can anyone offer a source for the Phillips?

Who knows which is the 3W vs the 10W? I'm guessing glove box is 3W and hood, dome, and cargo are 10W?

Thanks!

i couldn't find that answer in PET or the work shop manual but that sounds right.  Haven't started looking for the bulb yet but will let you know when I find a source.
