What advantage does Moton/Leda/KW have over M030?
#1

For a street car that gets used on the track in solo racing (ie: time trials, etc.) what advantage is there to replacing the stock M030 and getting a full aftermarket suspension? Is it primarily the range of adjustability or something else? For example, my car has a M030 coil over suspension. It can change the ride height because it's a coil over set up and can change the stiffness of the shock absorber with the top dial. I also have new springs to replace the stock ones. So what can something like a Moton/Leda/KW set up do that the M030 can't?

They allow you to adjust both compression and rebound as well as height.

Well, the general impression is that M030 is good suspension. It certainly works well on my car, but it is expensive to buy, and expensive to have rebuilt. Rather than rebuild mine (it needs it) I have ordered KW V3 because it is at least as good as the M030 on the track (maybe better) and the rate adjustability means that it should be more comfortable on the highway.

There's been a lot of discussion about it here and on the UK forums, have you searched? Here is a recent thread:

One thing to remember is that the M030 shocks/struts are based on designs dating back 15-years. Very good in the day, but as you'd expect, technology has moved on.

More modern suspension designs have new features. For example, the KW suspension has parallel high and low speed paths in the shock to filter out high frequency stuff but keep a tight reign on roll movement.

BTW, here's a list of shock/strut suppliers for the 968: http://www.weissach.net/924-944-968_Suspen...ml#ShocksStruts

Well as you may know I had the Mo30 which in fact had been fully rebuilt and modified to be even more sporting. ie I had the 'stem' shortened and the valving made firmer to go along with custom shortened springs plus 968 rear coilover helpers and while this was good for a while the KW's are much better in every aspect. As stated previously to be fair, the technology in the Mo30's would go back at least 20 years and at the rate of improvement in so many things in this world, time has indeed passed them also.

When I go slowly over speed humps in car parks, I can hear a release of pressure like a small air brake sound. This is the high speed bypass valve that allows you to ride the kerbs on the track without the normal reaction to very stiffly sprung cars. The KW's do indeed ride better on the street but also allow me to corner so much better than the Mo30's did. I can distinctly remember a few particular corners on 2 different tracks which were just plain bad for me but now I look forward to going through them and at much higher speeds. This is the key to better times on the track. Better terminal speeds out of corners is the one absolute way to improve. Obviously everything else increases too if you come out of them faster. Your speed that you carry down the next straight will be higher and as long as you can handle the higher braking loads then you must decrease your lap times. I have been able to do both with the KW's and Pfc pads. I should be on commission for these brands the way I advertise them! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> HMMM...I wonder??? Nah...as if?
