driving the flashmobile

don't get me wrong, the chip and exhaust and all that help a lot, but you asked for the top 3 for 0-60 - weight, resistance and launch will always be the biggest factors there

Not at all, that's was exactly the insight I was looking for.

and of course, in my usual brilliant ways I did just the opposite - added weight directly to a rotating mass ( the wheels ) placing spacers to change asthetics for the better but at the expense of performance... and by a lot ! those 5+lbs on each wheel ( mostly from the added, longer steel bolts, not from the spacers themselves ) just wiped out all the weight savings I gained from getting rid of the oem catback and the spare tire...

funny how that works - weight is a very critical thing - where it is becomes even more critical - even on where it is on the wheel - for example, tire weight is more critical than hub weight - the farther from center, the more effect, by a lot

the other thing that can affect things when it come to the wheel and such is the contact patch and friction - wider tires can make for slower 0-60 times if they can't break loose from their static position as easily - i know for example that while i lost a bit of weight in going to my new tire and wheel setup, i still lost a bit of time in my 0-60 - i just don't get the same launch - it's not huge, but it's there - the handling improvement more than offsets it, but it bugs me nonetheless

the same could probably be said of your spacers - the handling and aesthetic improvement likely offset the acceleration change

That has always been my concern as I stated in a thread a month or so ago. however after looking at Fox's car, one of many that I
've seen with the 18" set up I made the plunge. Theres nothing quite like a good 0-60, Its truly exhilarating! My exhaust is next on my list which will drop quite a bit of weight. What other areas can I do in the mean time. Know what, my concerns are really off topic and don't belong in the out for a drive section.

new thread time!

That IS my car bv. To channel Kilgore "I love the smell of burning oil, brake pads, and clutches in the morning".

Seriously, I had the pleasure of driving the 968 to work this week as my DD is in the shop. What a great car. And the aroma in the parking garage is sublime.

ps - This SW is a little buggy today. I tried to delete the extra Kilgore's a couple of times. Interesting. Oh, and ds - you need to think about another avatar. I keep thinking you are mrmister.

Back on this - I'm curious if one of you guys can calculate the probable effect on the acceleration times in terms of seconds or fractions of seconds slow down in the 0-60 , 30-70, 70-100 ( or whatever the other usual mph measurements are ), and the 1/4 mile time, just by taking the stock times for example and then calculating what those 5 lbs "hanging weight" on each wheel will translate to.. we know in terms of weight itself it's roughly 4X to 5X
when added to the rotating mass, particularly in a "hanging" mode, so it's as if I would add a 80 lbs -100 lbs person in my car, but I'm curious how that translates to seconds.. just wondering how much slower my car is with these things on ?

you'll feel it more than it translates into short burst times - it's there for sure, but you're looking at a car length or two in a 1/4 mile run - not the end of the world for most folks, but if it bugs you, that's a different story

First time you loose by a 1/2 a car length, It's sure to bug you.

lol - i never lose by a 1/2 car length - i don't race like that - i don't even remember ever having a finish that close when i was on the track - running around on the road, i know that thee are way too many variables to do any kind of comparison, and i only use the short run stuff to gauge modifications

pretty much takes that out of the equation

for me, it's all about the fun factor - if something "feels" like it's slowing down the car, i have to decide if i like the other benefits enough to keep it (i.e. subwoofer, amps, et all)

would it make you guys feel better knowing that we would lose by no more than 1/2 a car length in a 1/4 mile, or even win by a 1/2 a car length depending on the specific model variation and production year.. to THIS ?!

Lamborghini Countach 5000 S 14.4 sec 1/4 mile... with all the roar of those cylinders pushing it..

makes ME feel just a little better, and takes my mind off being a bit slower with those spacers on..
