would like to remove the seal around the top of the door to paint. Does it just pull out or is it glued in place?

Probably has some adhesive, but its grip should be practically non-existent due to age at this point. Start to remove it and you know soon!

It is glued in place with a rubber type adhesive...some areas better than others...remove it slowly and you can re-use it.

3M makes a good weather strip adhesive for when you go to install the new seal.
