well, certainly any decision you make is yours to make, for whatever reasons you make it, and i am not one to try to swing you one way or the other on this - i think i've made my feelings clear on the DMF vs SMF topic, and that it is very subjective
just one point though - your guru seems to me to be making a judgement on something without any justification or reasoning - there is no reason that i can think of that the DMF issue would be limited to earlier cars - it is the same part in all years - there was no substitution or change in the part, so there should be no correlation to years - on what does he base this conclusion? frankly, most of the cars i've personally seen with the failure are 94 and 95, but then, i don't see too many early cars either - this is a fairly normal thing though with cars - it was the same with the pinion bearing - first we saw it in early cars, now we see it in all of them - as time goes on, and the mileage and age increase, these kinds of things pop up across the board
it is very likely that he is making that judgement based purely on age the of the car or mileage - therefore, next year, it will probably expand to include 93s, then 94s and so on
it is amazing that you got that many miles out of yours, and i think you should give lessons on how to shift - lol - many could stand to benefit from your technique
whatever you decide to do is fine, but i would make sure that any input has a basis in fact, and not conjecture
all that being said, you probably are making the right decision anyway
