Is my flywheel stock?
#1

Hello,

I know all about 944s, but this 968 drivetrain is new to me. Pulled the bellhousing off my motor and it has an aluminum flywheel with a hand engraved part number. This isn't stock I take it, correct?

Second, does anyone know the compatibility of bolting the 968 motor into a 944? If I want to use the 5 speed, I have to use the 944 bellhousing, right? Can I use the 968 flywheel/clutch or do I have to keep the 944 flywheel?

Thanks,

Alex

there are a few different aluminum ones - i can't think of a way to tell which one it is without pulling it out

the subject of the swap has come up before - i would do a detailed search here - i know that joseph sc has done it - pete at rs barn has too, and would be a good source - he's not that far away either

I have a 968 engine in my 944S2. I kept the S2 bellhousing. I have used both a 968 6 speed and an S2 5 speed at various times, they both bolt straight on. Not sure how it would work if you used the 968 bellhousing though.

Thanks for the quick response. Were the stock flywheels aluminum though and did you use the S2 or 968 flywheel?

The stock flywheels on both the S2 and the 968 engine I bought were both steel. They are now both nice and rusty. I use a Spec Racing Flywheel and clutch, but they are specifically for a 944S / 944 S2. The Spec 968 flywheel is also listed as a seperate part I don't think you can mix bellhousings and flywheels.

Ok, thanks. Next question; the 6 speed bolted up to the S2 torque tube? What did you do about the speedometer or did you not even care about that?

Thanks!

on the 968, the speedo is not picked up via the flywheel or torque tube

I know, it comes from the ABS sensors. The 944s gets speed from a traditional-type sensor in the 5 speed transmission. So, how do I adapt my speedometer pickup to read off the axle...?

Sorry, can't help there. I don't have any original wiring and my dash is custom built. I use GPS for speed.
