No more STOCK 968 Pressure Plates?
#1

I was talking to Chuck Underwood at Paragon-Products about the pressure plates. Here's what I got back regarding the 968 Spec PP:

Hi Tony,

Did a little more research on the pressure plates. We have three major suppliers for Sachs clutch parts. Also talked with a rep. No one sells/supplies the 2300-2500lb pressure plate. Including Sachs. The only plate available are the higher clamping force plates. There is more to the story but if anyone claims they have the lower clamping force plate they are most likely mistaken.

Wish I could help you unfortunately there is no access to the part you want. Let me know if you have any questions.

So.... Does Pete at RSBarn have a stash of these somewhere? Hopefully?

to my knowledge you can only get the correct pressure plates through porsche, and not the aftermarket suppliers (SSF WorldPac, etc) that most places like paragon use. i am pretty sure that pete gets them directly from porsche, and worked out a deal to get them.

i just thought i'd check this out:

the original part number 964.116.028.01 is NLA through porsche (pretty sure it was about 2300-2500lbs)

the replacement part number 964.116.027.01 is also NLA

the current part number is 964.116.027.90 and has been in place since before 2003. it is the same part for the 89-94 964 as well as supposedly for all years of the 968. (pretty sure it's 2600lbs)

for the 964, there is also a 964.116.028.90 (pretty sure it's 2600lbs) and a 964.116.028.91for the 3.3 turbo (3100-3300lbs), and a 964.116.028.53 for the 3.6 turbo (pretty sure it's 3700lbs)

i'm working on getting real pressure ratings for all of these, but so far i only have the 3.3 turbo

Very interesting. I look forward to seeing your results. I just repaired my firewall and wish to reduce the pedal pressure in the future and want to be sure of the correct PP to buy.

Which is the one that Pete at RS Barn is (or was) selling. I'm out of town and away from my P/N's now but it has the green paint marking, not the blue stripe one like my PO installed. Feels right. Makes it a pleasure to drive in traffic. Not cheap but worth every penny.

pete says it's the OEM plate for the 968, which nobody else has. i have no reason not to believe him. he does seem to dig up some cool stuff. i believe the ones he gets are AP and not Sachs, which is also an OEM supplier to porsche.

green stripe is correct.

Here's a pic of the AP 2500 lb. pressure plate I got through Pete at RS Barn. Getting this baby installed is my next project, so I can't report in yet if clutch pedal weight is lower, but I hope so. Stay tuned.

The part number is 964.116.027.90

interesting. that is the normal part number you get from the dealership as the standard replacement, which would indicate nothing special about it. it does have the green stripe, which indicates use for the 968 only. can you see the manufacturer logo? i'm guessing it's AP

I believe that's the one I got with the flywheel I purchased from Pete.

If so, clutching will be smooth and require very little effort, like butter!

lol - i hate that. that's a complaint i have about the 968 clutch.

i actually like a stiff clutch. i went out of my way to put in a 3200lb plate. much faster shifting. a bit of a pain in traffic though, and i would not do that on a commuter.

Well we all know your a little sadistic. I have the stiffer replacement plate in mine and after a long trip or traffic it gets a little old and my leg starts to feel it. Maybe I just need to get some more exercise.

yeah - i get that. on the ortega run i had a cramp in my left leg and could not make it go away. really sucked.

still, i like the feel of the plate. i like that i can really tell under my foot what is going on, and the exact instant that the clutch engages. with the OEM clutch, it is vague and more like guesswork. i don't get the same feedback through my foot.

Flash, strangely, I couldn't find anything on the pp that identifies it as being made by AP, tho there is the 'Made in Italy' printing near the part number.

It was my impression that if you order a 'standard' 968 clutch kit from anyone but Pete, you get a 3100 lb. Sachs pressure plate originally designed for the 964. And while it'll work in a 968, it doesn't have the 'correct' 2500 lb. clamping force (potentially speeding up firewall failure) or the correct 'finger geometry' which causes less smooth pedal travel. Can you confirm?

Yea I would have to confirm the stiffness of Flash's clutch. Took a little of getting adjusted to when I took his car for a spin. But the feel is most definitely there. Would also hate to drive it in traffic. The drive in Laguna had me looking way ahead to make sure I was ready in traffic. Course I also stalled it a couple of times but that was my own ineptness. Bob sat there sort of smiling! I'm of course mortified!

My wife is the same way except she is a truly sick puppy and drives it in rush hour traffic on a road with a ton of lights.

The clutch in my car only has to pushed in a couple of inches so stiff or soft is really on no consequence to me.

pretty much same here. between gears i use maybe an inch or so when i am driving hard above second gear, and maybe as much as 2 inches when i am driving normally above second. a bit more between first and second in both instances. the only time i get near the floor is when i am at a stop

Here's the pressure plate I got from Pete. It does say made in Italy and it has the p/n that Flash says is current. I think the clutch pedal feel is "just right" with this PP, but I have no idea what the actual pressure is.

I never commute in my car, so I'm leaning for the stiffer pressure plate for the reasons Flash states. But I worry a little about the firewall flex. Should the "rev 2.0" firewall brace offer enough protection?
