Pressure Plate - best price
#1

This heavy pressure plate that the previous owner installed is driving me crazy. It's heavy and releases just off the floor. It is not in harmony with the rest of the feel of the car.

Is 964-116-027-90 the lighter original pressure plate? Where is the best place to buy one?

Also plan to upgrade to the Design 1 super charger. Is this enough plate?

I think Pete at RSBarn has a line of those. From last I understood they were getting harder to find. I have the heavier pressure plate in mine and learned to live with it and it's all I knew as it was in the car when I got it and I hadn't driven another 968 previously.

I have a heavier pp (installed by a PO) as well and hate it - it makes driving the car a real chore, especially at lower, around-town speeds. I'll be getting Pete's 'original' clamping force pp as soon as funds free up. I hope it doesn't go NLA in the meantime!

Had a nice chat with Pete this afternoon. New OEM pressure plate is on the way.

As far as I know, my clutch disc and flywheel are fine. Can I replace just the pressure plate? Or is it a 'while you're in there' deal where it makes more sense to replace the disc and get the flywheel surfaced as well?

this is sort of a loaded question - there is the "perfect world" and "reality"

in the perfect world, both the flywheel and pressure plate have freshly surfaced friction areas, and are both balanced together - while the nature of the dual mass flywheel absorbs harmonics, and you don't absolutely have to balance it for it to be smooth, the energy lost in that process is energy not transmitted to the wheels

it will be hard finding somebody who will surface the dual mass flywheel - most machine shops don't like having to snap a cutter on the gap

it will be very hard to find a shop that will balance the flywheel, as it is a very difficult process to isolate the 2 masses

for all practical purposes, as long as the flywheel is completely smooth and free of grooves, and you scuff it up to get rid of deposits and such, and assuming it passes the rebound deflection test, then you can generally leave it alone

never ever ever reuse a clutch disk (reinstalling a low mileage and age clutch disk onto the same pressure plate and flywheel which have not been altered, surfaced or anything, is ok, but still not recommended)

Thanks Flash - I've been very happy with the lightweight flywheel I put on my M3, and am definitely considering that route for the 968, tho my experience with the 997 shift knob disaster (it was on the car for no more than a week before I could no longer take all the noise and vibration - your old stocker is working great btw) is making me think twice about messing with potentially vibration-increasing mods to the touchy 968 drivetrain.

I need to listen to / feel what your setup is like before making the decision to go LWFW or stick with the stock DMFW and just get the lighter clamping force PP and stock disc.

I'll let you know soon about the Superbowl® party - gotta talk to the gf first and see what's up!

of course she is welcome too - this is a "spouse" friendly event for sure

on the flywheel, if you opt to go lightweight, and are not going to supercharge, let me know - i have a barely used 12lb fidanza here
