Flywheel gone bad?
#1

Cross referencing a thread I started on the Driveline/Transaxle section. I just made a video showing the movement of the clutch assembly seen through the starter hole while the drive shaft in the torque tube is being rocked from side to side by hand through the window on the rear housing section of the tube. Looks like a bad flywheel to me but I get none of the usual symptoms of a bad DMF. Ideas much appreciated. Thanks.

Looks more like the center of the disc has gone south on you. Either way, you are pulling the thing apart. Bet you're glad it's not a 944!

Believe it or not, the car still drives fine. A rattle comes from the clutch when hitting the friction point, but it engages fine and no problem shifting the gears; I also mentioned earlier a knock on/off throttle, I guess it is all related.

On a side note, the clutch is basically new from 10 years ago (kit part number 968 116 911 00) when it was replaced by the dealer and hardly driven since. The pressure plate still looks shiny new. I see on the repair bill that the flywheel was deemed acceptable to be re-used, though I wouldn't give much credit to that.

LUK no longer produce a replacement flywheel, a lightened one is a huge mistake unless it’s a race car

your only option is original equipment $1700 ish

Mine flywheel also went bad, too much rotational give. My mechanic thought that his machine shop could resurface, but was told no.

I called Larry Bienias at 20th Street Auto in AZ. He was able to find me a used unit in the low hundreds that worked out great.

Larry has been an excellent source for parts that are lo longer available new, or are just to pricey.

I have an OE with 109,000 miles on it if interested.

First, I want to thank all who offered used parts, references of parts suppliers, and diagnostics help.

All point to a bad flywheel. As a final piece of evidence, I made a video of the chatter I get:

I'm sticking with clutch center.

Humm interesting. You mean the clutch disc would be no good?

Yes, either the springs (or the rubber, if it's a rubber centered disc) or the rivets that attach it to the center. A relatively easy fix on a 968, in that the disc can come out without taking the car down to the frame.

My 2 cents, Might be wrong, but one thing is for certain, you are going to be pulling everything apart to find out. The good thing is, once you pull back the pressure plate and pull the disc, you will know how much more you need to do. It will be pretty obvious if the disc is shot.

I'm pretty sure the 968 clutch disc has neither springs nor rubber, the flywheel acts as the absorbing mechanism.

Correct the clutch appears to be a solid unit without springs or rubber.
