contemplating new big brake kit - interested?
#21

i too am surprised, but the economy may be playing in here

as for other sizes, it's not likely to happen - there are a couple of reasons for this - i have no way of gauging the clearances needed with the S4 calipers - i also have no way of determining brake balance with them

these are both critical, since brakes are not something to be screwed around with willy nilly - i will have to be very careful when considering rotor design to insure safety and effectiveness

as i said, i'm going to make one size, and at this point, likely for my car alone - there are clearance issues even on the 17s that i am not sure i can beat, and with little to no interest, i really don't feel like wasting my time on coming up with something that nobody seems to want

For me, it is the economy. I would certainly love to have better brakes, but it is just not in the cards right now.

perhaps i'll revisit it in the future - but i'm not going forward until enough people are ready to pony up on this one

this is only a hobby for me after all

it's official - after a LOT of measuring and thinking, i am abandoning this project for even 17" rims - there just isn't the room for the hardware if i use these calipers, and i have no interest in using others, or spending the time figuring out how

i am still going to make big rotors for myself, but i am running 18s, and won't have the same issues, but i am now going to make them as small as i can, so as to remove the maximum amount of weight, but it is still too large for the 17

it's not like anybody is really going to be broken up about this though

there is a SMALL chance i can figure out a fully floating OEM size rotor for the 17, but this would be STRICTLY for racing - but, given the lack of interest, i seriously doubt that will ever happen either

Hi Flash,
Any chance a two piece replacement rotor can be done without reworking the calipers so it fits all wheel sizes? cost should be alot less and we all need to replace rotors at some time.
thanks

no - that's what i was saying - there is no room for the hardware for any fixed rotor using the OEM calipers that would fit within the 17, let alone the 16

there is a SMALL chance of a fully floating rotor fitting, but it would NOT be any good for street use whatsoever, and the cost would be about $1800 to get into them - however, i have no interest in pursuing this at this time

understood. thanks for looking into it though.

i'm about 3 weeks from diving back into this project - i have decided what i am doing - it will be a 2 piece rotor (aluminum hat and standard cast friction surface) - it will have adaptors that will extend out the OEM calipers to accommodate the new larger diameter rotors - the thickness will be standard OEM thickness - pad size will be OEM - rotors will likely be slotted and not drilled

this will ONLY fit 18" wheels - there will be NO setup done for 16s or 17s - sorry guys

cost will be about $2.5k for the complete 4 wheel kit (which is about half that of a full 4 wheel big red kit)

weight savings will be about 3lbs each - braking improvement will be about 25%

i can make one set or more - if i do this just for myself, i will NEVER be doing any more until i need them again

so, if you are looking at a rotor upgrade, speak now - once i dive into this, i'll have the dimensions for the rotors very quickly, have the design for the adaptors immediately thereafter, and it will only be a matter of days before i place the order - there will be no second chance - it makes no difference to me, but if i am going to do a batch, it needs to be a batch of 10 - other than that, i'm only doing these for myself

i don't want to be a hard ass, but i'm not looking to make a bunch of these - they are pricey items, and not likely to sell a lot anyway - i'm all but certain this will be a one shot deal - i want them for my car, and don't want to wait, and won't let it get hung up on waiting for somebody else to get their wallet together

figure on me being ready about mid february - i should be clear of the rest of my projects by then
