cold air intake
#1

Are there any cold air intake kits for these cars? I know about the holes in the airbox. I am looking for a kit that mounts behind the bumper opening.

Thanks, Rob

evosport makes one, but it does not work as well - it's about $180, and requires removal of your bumper cover to install and service

while you are certainly free to do that, and we tested that design, along with other designs, but we steered away from that idea for the following reasons:

access was very difficult, which meant service was as well

the big one though was that it did not perform as well as the modified airbox - the reasons are simple - the tube itself has a per foot restriction factor - the bend required added to that - the cone filter has less surface area

the modified airbox achieves a zero restriction, when using the K&N filter, and is receiving ambient temp while moving - you can't do any better than that

the cone filter setups result in about 25% less power than the airbox mod - it's more than stock, but less than the mod, and at a much higher cost and maintenance issue

Just look at the size of your filter. The system was designed well when compared to BMW's, Honda's, etc...who benefit greatly from cold air intakes. I thought about one for the sound/semi-performance, but I can already hear the engine well enough and the airbox mod is about $5 versus $200. KN also made a good bit of difference! I have yet to do the airbox mod. I am going to dyno as I sit now with no chip, no exhaust, just KN filter, 160k miles. Then as I start adding parts, I am going to continually dyno to see its effect on higher mileage vehicles. The reason I suggest this is when I was in the BMW scene, a new 3.0L with intake/exhaust/chip would be at 210-215whp. I have watched in the past year or two several cars with those mods at 150-200k miles, no rebuilds, get 230, 235whp. I understand there is a manufacturing difference, but a loose engine in my opinion always performs better than a babied low mileage engine. I.E. I always break my new engines in like I am going to drive them later in life.

actually, i was surprised at how little our E46 325 was quoted at getting from such things - dinan claims only 14hp gain with his whole package - i got nearly that much from the airbox alone, and more from the chip

How much difference does the K&N filter make for the airbox mod? Also, the total HP gain for the airbox+RSBarn chip + RS Barn catback = +20-25HP?

about 4 hp deficit using stock paper filter versus K&N

airbox with K&N + racer x chip was over 20

haven't dynoed RS stage 1 with airbox yet, becaue i have stage 2 with the header, but it should be 1-2hp more than above

should be no noticable hp increase with cat-back (just improved throttle response and less weight, along wit a much better tone, which is still all a performance improvement)

Thanks! I'll run out and buy the K&N!

Response and power delivery is much smoother with the setup.

I was going to ask Pete, but how much less does his catback (just catback, no headers, etc) weigh than stock? Stainless? What muffler did he use? Can someone describe the sound? Thanks.

a lot

i think it was 38lbs lighter or something like that - i posted the weight in his exhaust thread here

use the search feature and poke around for that thread - when you find it, it answers all those questions - great feature and very useful

Oh, I have read. And Pete's site states the 38 lbs, as well. However, this is for the complete system, and I am asking about only the catback. I have not seen it stated what muffler he uses, but maybe it is somewhere.

BTW, I am waiting on my trim rings from 968Eng, but I cut my airbox last night. Definitely can feel it. Sorta. Less peaky than before, it seems.

I'll search again to see if I can answer the questions I asked.

Guess I owe you an apology. 33 lbs.

You should email pete at P951T@aol.com with your questions. The muffler he sent me is a DynoMAX superturbo. The sound is much more throatier, with a definate growl as you get on it and the rpm's rise. It is hardly noticeable when just cruising. It is not the waaaa sound that is so popular the cans popular with Japanese car tuners...

It better not be. I hate the eff'ed up weedeater sound! I wasn't planning to do a catback, but 33 lbs is a lot of weight savings! I was planning to get a chip from Pete.

As a side note, I still haven't figured out how to do multiple word searches. I think I tried all the common formats.
