Clutch hit the floor
#21

HI Guys,

Been reading this post and I'm sorry I don't know what the master and slave parts are? Is the master you are referring to the big black round thing supporting the hydraulic reservoir? As far as the slave I have no idea what your talking about. Can someone describe a little more in detail? I have the braided clutch line from Pete and I am going to change it shortly but I want to make sure while I am doing it I replace all the necessary parts.

Thanks

I'm not an expert, but the slave cylinder controls the hydraulics for the clutch and the master controls it for the brakes, they are separate systems, but are connected by the same fluid reservoir. If slave is not working, brakes will still work. Slave is located under the car next to the starter (mine is black and it has two bolts holding it on.)

A leak could making the clutch/brakes feel spongy, or worse, they could stop working completely, such as the case with mine. Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I think you will get some warning with the brakes before the pedal drops to the floor since there are four lines coming out of the MC and all four would have to go bad for that to happen while the slave only has one hose and if it goes bad, you are screwed, as I was. I suspect your brake pedal will begin to feel spongy and that will be the tip that something is up.

I'm not sure how much of a DIY it is to replace SC/clutch hose because the line has to be bled properly, seems a little more difficult than just breeding the brake lines.

there is a master for both the brakes and the clutch

the hose that blows runs between the clutch master and clutch slave (connecting to a hard line along the way)

OK, now I am confused. Where is the clutch master located? I also thought the brake and clutch master is the same unit...even though I could never figure out how that will work.

The brake master has the brake fluid reservoir attached to it. The clutch master cylinder is below the brake master and has the blue braided line running to the top of it and the rubber line running down to the slave cylinder. Look below the brake master.

I'm thinking my brake master is on its way out now. Age is a terrible thing...

correct - they only share a reservoir

I replaced my clutch master and slave cylinders when I replaced my clutch high pressure line with th steel braided one from D1 Racing. It isn't a terribly difficult job, but it does require some patience, as some of the nuts are in tight spaces. As far as bleeding the clutch, it's actually easier than bleeding the brakes, because there's only one line, as opposed to four.
