clutch housing plug
#1

Noticed that the clutch plate can be seen from the top between the rear of engine and beginning of firewall. Seems that should have some kind of cover over it. The only thing I can find that may be close is on ill. 301-00,p#'s 4 or 5. Has anyone got a suggestion?

I'm not sure that I am following you. you should be able to see the bell housing behind the engine, but I don't think there are any covers there that will allow you to see the clutch assembly. IIRC the bell housing is a solid cast piece, the only place you can see the clutch assembly is from below once you have opened either the inspection plug or the cover on the passenger side.

If you look at the PET catalog on illustration #301-00, pt.#8, "clutch housing", and yes, I normally call it the bellhousing, but since I specified the drawing, which calls it the "clutch housing", I did not want to mix things up.

I can look at the back of my engine, from the top, where the...bellhousing meets the engine, and next to where the pulse sender mounts to the bellhousing, there is, at least on my car, an open, square or slightly rectangular hole that I can observe the clutch plate or pressure plate rotating. Seems that should have some sort of cover or rubber plug over it.

Just wondering if anyone has noticed this.

I must admit I struggled to see it, but I have the hole too.

looking at PET I also think this is normal and that there should not be a cover either.

Don't like it. Need to cover it because my fumble fingered self will surely drop something in there.

That is one of the TDC mark viewing ports. The other is on the bottom of the housing and does have a plug covering it.

I assume the top hole is only used by contortionists

Hard to believe that no one has fried their clutch plate with a hole like that in there. You'd think that road debris alone would get up in there eventually.
