Central warning light
#1

Hi all,

Having an issue with the central warning light in my 92.

When I start the car the warning light shines bright then goes out as usual. After a few minutes of driving it begins to shine dimly and progressively grow brighter to full shine after a period of time.

I've tried bringing up a code by the accelerator down key on method but get no pauses for a code.this has worked in the past.if I stop, turn off the ignition and the restart the light is initially off and the starts to slowly grow brighter again.

Any ideas?

Sounds like you have low voltage or bad earths

I'll check that'

Charging system shows 13.5+ volts

Headlights light up the night...

Car runs great. Though the temp gauge isn't working. IR gun shows normal temps

I have a 82 928. It has a central warning control box mounted under left foot rest

Does the 968 have a similar control located anywhere?

Don't know why the central warning light coding system isn't working when it would be helpful...

I would start with cleaning the grounding points (there is a diagram somewhere on here) and the edge connectors and threaded posts on the instrument cluster. I also had some strange issues with my hot water control valve that were solved when I replaced my ignition switch. I never figured out the relationship, but success is success and I was glad to have the problem go away.

Grounding Points Locations can be found in this thread.

No control box on the 968, but almost anything will put the big light on

Low brake fluid level

Handbrake switch

Brake pads

you may have another dash warning light that has burned out,  For example, the oil level light may be burned out but low oil will still turn on the big red light - you just won't have the other light for reference,  Turn the key on and, after looking in the owners manual, ensure that all the dash lights that are supposed to come on briefly after ignition is tuned on on are actually coming on. My guess is that's your problem.

IMHO, one of the ( if not THE ) most idiotic alert function in 968 history ;  aside from electronic glitches that can cause that light to come on and throw you into a complete state of panic thinking your engine is toast, it comes on for the most innocuous reasons some of which are mentioned above.  Your parking hand brake can be one click up, your oil level can be a quart low, the secondary air system in your emissions can be off / needs an easy  reset,  yet you get the exact same “ my car is about to go up in flames “ light you do if your pistons grenade,  or your rods bend , or your timing belt breaks .  Ugh.

One thing that is not covered by the big red warning light is the condition of your brake pads. That is covered on the left gauge by a warning light that say "BRAKE PAD". Everybody is right. It is a pain to spot the fault. Keep searching!!... Could be as simple as a little light bulb out.

I do like the warning/caution light. Derived from airplanes telling the pilots that something is not right. On my 928 it was built into the side panel. If you pushed it it would go out if you had a minor malfunction. If your problem was big ( ie, no oil, leaking brakes , engine overheating etc) it would stay on and you would know to stop. I wish the cars would have two systems. A yellow CAUTION light and a red WARNING light.

Thanks everyone!

I'll check the grounds. Porsche loves numerous grounds!

Are there seperate temp senders? One for engine management, one for the cluster gauge?

The way the light comes on progressively ...

I'm wondering why the warning light coding function isn't working?it has in the past

I'll check the other cluster lights

Brake pads are good

Parking brake switch isn't great. Got it shimmed off. Parking brake warning light isn't on

O2 sensor could have 120k on it

The phase capacitor ?

The phase capacitor ?

Low Blinker fluid?

Did you use German air when you filled your tires? Very temperamental...

Haha, I was going to bring up the blinker fluid, but Jay beat me to it.   And was also wondering if the phase capacitor is the same as the flux capacitor, but I don’t think 968s have those , I understand they were exclusive to DeLoreans ..

Yes there is three temp senders, blue one at the front is for the ECU for cold starts, the other one is behind that and has two spade terminals, this is for the gauge, there is a third one in the head right in the middle under the fuel cover, this is Oil Temp for the ECU

If you getting nothing back from a blink test then check all the simple things first then if no joy, find a place with a diagnostic tool

If the O2 sensor is detecting a continual lean condition will it generate a central warning light?

No but it should put the engine check light on, and you should see something in the blink test as the knock sensors will be working hard

Okay, I am also having a weird issue with the warning light.

To be honest, my car sits a lot. It does stay on a trickle charge, so starting isn't an issue.

When I start the car, all is fine, but warning light is on.

It will stay on until I shut the car off, then restart it, then the light goes off, but the restart is not as crisp and quick as the initial start.

If the light comes on during the second start, it will usually go off as soon as the rpm's come up.

It's a little bat-crap bonkers...

I don't do my own wrenching, so I need a few suggestions to let my mechanic guy know some ideas when I take it in for the new front end parts as soon as I can get the unicorn front strut mounts from Posrche....

Thanks folks.

Maybe a silly question, but is your alternator warning lamp working? My Jetta will occasionally display the alternator lamp until the revs rise a little if it's not been driven for a while. Perhaps your 968 is doing the same thing but with a blown alternator lamp, so that only the central warning lamp is coming on instead of both?

Thanks,

I am not getting any other warning lights lit. Amps seems to be charging, oil pressure good. Fuel tank full, e-brake off, temp good.

Car runs fine once I get moving. After the second and rougher start, the warning light goes out and does not reappear until after the car sits for a while.

All subsequent starts on the same day do not display this behavior.

Maybe it's just a quirk from sitting more than driving.

Could be. I’ve had an annoying “feature” going on for a couple of years now: my cruise control works every other time I shut my hood.  :glare:
