Driver's door won't open
#21

Right on, Brian. And, it's not like I haven't dealt with the instrument cluster before. I've done a complete dashboard swap, so I'm pretty familiar with what's involved in the instrument cluster. It's just that every time you go in to fix something, it seems to cause something else to go awry. So, for two years, I've left well enough alone. But I'm getting tired of things not working quite the way they're supposed to, and I know I know how to fix what's wrong. It's just doing it...

About the only thing to worry about is that the levers on the wiring plugs either break or will be broken when you get there. Just be sure that when the cluster is back in that all the plugs are seated. You can reach one from the bottom and see/touch the others. The one by the drivers side is the one that usually slips out a bit; it can be pushed in easily as I mentioned earlier.

Make sure to mark/notice the steering wheel position for re assembly. Taking it off makes the job WAY easier.

So - the driver's door project is done - finished it yesterday. Drove the car a couple of hundred miles yesterday and today, and this afternoon the speedo and tach started malfunctioning. Now I really have to do the instrument cluster - but I'm not sure about how to address the new problem. Anyway, though, this should be the end of this thread, and I'll now move to one that is relevant to the instrument cluster.

I just came across this thread while doing some research on my own problem. My door has been working fine, and I actually just had a new handle put on about a year ago because mine finally gave out. Then today I went to get in the car. I forgot that i had locked it and tried to open the door, which obviously didn't work. I guess I still had my hand on the lever when I hit the remote unlock button. Well, the lock didn't go all the way up and now I can't open the door at all. I tried locking and unlocking it multiple times, with the remote, the key and the inside door lock button. I ended up crawling across the center console (tricky in business clothes) but I still couldn't open the door from the inside. Thankfully I was at home, as was my wife, so I stole her car to get back to the office and will deal with this door issue tonight.

Any suggestions on how to get this working again, or things I should be looking for? I know there are lots of little parts in there but given that I just got a new handle not too long ago I figured it should all be good still. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

Fortunately you have a cab, so just consider that door welded shut and just step over the door to get in it now. Much easier if you leave the top down all the time. Maybe put a towel on the seat or something to keep it from getting dirty

Not sure what would happen if you held the lever while unlocking it, apparently it's not good. It's pretty hard to get at the lock mechanism at this point if you can't open the door. I don't think you can pull the panel off. Maybe gently hitting the door while pulling up the lock mechanism and working the lever. Don't use the power lock, if it's jammed you will just stress the plastic rod and end up breaking it.

So the problem is solved. I fiddled with it for a while with no luck so I called my local shop. They suggested lightly tapping the handle assembly with a rubber mallet and maybe just driving around a while to try to vibrate it loose. I tried the mallet with no luck, so went for a quick cruise. I found a few bumpy roads and went over a few railroad tracks. I got back to the house and the door was still stuck, so I just fiddled with it some, using the key to try to lock and unlock it while trying to use the handle and move the lock cylinder. Eventually it just came free and now it is working no problem. As a note, the lever was actually pulled out to the handle and stuck in that position, so when I tried to open the door from the inside the handle could be easily pulled but it didn't do anything.

Just figured I would post this in case anyone ever has this problem. I guess the answer is just to work it for a while.
