Canon Filter Frustration
#1

To all my 968 friends who have converted to the Canon filter...how the heck do you unscrew the top to remove the cartridge without the body unscrewing with it??? If the body unscrews, you have a bigger mess than with the factory filter. And not making that mess was my whole reason for buying this thing. Ideas?

sure - use a ratchet drive type filter wrench on the body to hold it still while you use the other socket on the lid hex. you know, the kind you stick a socket extension into and then use a ratchet. the small one fits down in there just fine.

then, next time, don't tighten the lid so tight.

Nothing was tightened too tight.

I was able to remove the top with an impact wrench. Jeez.

The design problem is the clearance of the ends of the cartridge. It's just too tight against the o-ring. When you turn the top, you're torquing off the ends of the cartridge. That's why it's trying so hard to rotate the body. See picture.

And actually with the position of the power steering fluid hose coming from its reservoir on one side of the filter and the small water hose on the other side, I disagree that a ratchet drive type filter wrench fits just fine.

i used to use mine all the time, and it fit down in there just fine. plenty of room.

then i installed the body with the filter wrench, and stopped using a tool to tighten the lid, and just did it by hand. no more problems at all after that.

the cartridge is a one-use cartridge though, and the ends do pop off when you remove the lid. plenty of oil on the o-ring helps, but i still only manage to get it out intact about half the time.
