Anybody ever remove there oil filter stand flange?
#1

In this picture of the engine block, where the oil filter stand (aka oil/water heater heat exchanger) mates to the block, you can see a flange with a green o-ring around it:

The flange around which this o-ring fits is pressed into the block, and it had an identical o-ring on its opposite side, where it mates to the block. I'd like to replace this inner o-ring (along with every other stinkin' o-ring and seal in this car - all leaks must die!), but it of course involves pulling out this flange. It seems to be in pretty tight, and I want to pull it out without damaging the groove in which the outer o-ring sits. Has anybody here ever done this (besides Lear35A, who I've already emailed, but haven't heard back from yet)? What kind of tool is needed? The manual doesn't say. Thanks!

Woo-hoo! I love these all-too-rare occasions where I fits my thinkin' cap to my noggin just right - I figured out a way to get this little bugger out: I wrapped a string around the groove where the outer o-ring sits, tied it tight, gave it a good tug, and out it popped! Good thing, too - that inner o-ring looks pretty tired after being on the job for 20 years. Here's a picture of my handiwork:

On the not-so-proud front, I just noticed a horrible grammatical error in the title of this thread - "there" instead of "their"? Ugh... Makes me want to go out and bleed my breaks...

I would say keep wiggeling until it coms out , i always use a piece of round wood (broomstick kind) and put it in there en than wiggle and pull it at te same time , once it brakes loose it wil come out easy .

I may be doing this soon. Nice oil leak from that area. Thanks for the tip!

Bomb,

Best of luck, but I would imagine that removing the oil filter stand with the engine in the car would be pretty tough. I'm sure people have done it, but you'd probably have to take a lot of stuff off to get to it. It's terrible how Porsche crammed so much stuff into this one area. I hope it's not as bad as I'm making it out to be, but this is the main reason I want to be absolutely sure I replace every possible seal, particularly in this area, while I have the engine out of the car.
