Brakes - 1 more time...
#1

Pretty much settled on R4-S and Zimmerman's. I have not decided on drilled or flats. Do these prices look right to you all (parts only) - 2 different sources.

(all prices for a set of fronts or rears)
Pads - $90 (F or R)
Flats - between $170 and $360 fronts and between $230 and $300 rears
Drilled - $300 fronts, $250 rears

Then the labor I am guessing is $100 per corner?? Seems steep.

ALso, and I promise my last brake question - what about the hats? I don't want rust. I see some guys have success with paint and others don't. I'd love to get an updated set of opinions on painting after market rotors - does it work for any period of time? I don't plan on getting new rotors for many years, so I'd like the paint to hang in there. Any tricks?

Thanks, Joe

there is a company that does drilled zims and already coated for you - they were pretty cheap too - they are on ebay all the time - i'll probably go that route next if i don't get larger rotors worked out by then

They are from IRotors inc. 1-888-876-8677. front and rear cross drill and slot zinc plated $499.99 I got a set and they are great.
One problem that I ran into is that the zinc coating in not able to eliminate rusting...only protect. This last winter the snow melting chemicals got thru the zinc where the hub meets the disc. I cleaned the area with metal prep amd painted the area and the hub with my trusty ACE aluminum paint. Now all is well.

While you are in there I recommend stainless braided brake lines from RS BARN.

If you get standard Zimmerman rotors check to see that they are plated, I have seen some shops put on "OEM equivalent" rotor/hats that are raw metal....they rust in minutes!

My labor bill for 4 brake lines replaced, new front wheel bearing seals, front and rear rotors, bleed lines and install Porterfield pads all around was 6 hours.

The pic of the iRotor zim's looks different than others. As though there is no hat, or the hat is much smaller. WUWT?

the ones in the big pic aren't our rotors - just generic pics

Thanks gents. That looks like the ticket.

iRotor zinc-plated Zimmermans. $500
Porterfield R4-s Pads $180
RSB Braided Lines $80
Installation ~ $600

Heading for the apex properly, instead of engine braking 100 yards before the turn - priceless.

brakes are a job you can do yourself if you are set up for it - not a big deal really - basic tools for the most part - you would need a motive power bleeder though

rxter,
in a phone call to iRotor this afternoon, they said that there's an additional discount for phone orders...$399 for a set of 4 plated zimms. worth a try if you haven't ordered online yet; work a deal if you have.

Painted my hats with heat proof black...

I think there are only a few manufacturers of these rotors (casting companies) that sell to hundreds of aftermarket companys, some of which drill and slot. Some prices are very good, but that company may not be the one doing the cutting and you are only really placing the order with them.

My local P mech is begging me to let him order the parts so he can make the profit - interesting take on things. I imagine that if I don't agree then I'll see a slightly higher labor bill No big deal, everyone needs to make a profit - I get that.

Anyway, he mentioned "coat z" zimmerman's. I found this pic at Otto's site.

My mech quoted mt $110 per corner - non drilled or slotted (AAM has them for less). Frankly I am not sure I want the extra noice of drilled rotors. But they do look the s#%t, and at $100 per corner by phone (assuming no shipping I might go for it.

What do you all think about the Coat Z's? Anyone purchased from AAM (above all motorwerks)? http://www.aboveallmotorwerks.com/

just placed the phone order with iRotor - with Ca sales tax it was 429.92 for all 4 corners; free shipping. confirmed that they outsource the drilling and the plating.

Anyone used Troutman lines? Pelican has them. DOT approved.

Looks like you started something for sure Brian. Just got off the phone with Kim at iRotor and she said "...there sure are a lot of you guys all of a sudden..." Funny stuff. Only problem with that is now I need to get behind y'all in line for the plating to be completed...

I'm finally all set to get this done. Then I can start worrying about struts and braces and such. Looks like Barak's stimulous package (what little I'll see of it anyway) is going straight to Porshce or their spawn.

Looks like the Brians are in cahoots here. As long as the rotors work well that's all I care about. And I appreciate you all steering me to what has, and steering me away from what has not, worked for you in the past. Kinda what this community is all about far as I can tell...

I 2nd that. If I can spare someone a little heartache so they don't repeat my mistake, I'm going to post it. There have been quite a few post on this site that I've found via the search engine that has saved me considerable time.

My PM suggested that its about 3 hours to change the brake lines and bleed the system. That caught me a bit by surprise. It's been about 8K miles and 3 years since the clutch hydralics were flushed, so the flush seemed like a good idea regardless of whether I was planning to change out to stainless lines.

Does 3 hours (and the accompanying hole left in wallet) seem reasonable?

Thanks

Joe

Oh, and BTW Roland, Jeff had a red coupe (100K) and a seal grey (was that a color?) cab (62K) 968s in the garage, along with a couple of 944s. Jerry, the 968 expert there said that was as many as they ever see at one time. Must be spring...
