Belt question!!
#1

Alright guys, I just did my belts, water pump, and rollers. Just a little background:

Did it with a reman. h20 pump.

Car has 143030 on the clock.

Belts were done with 142642.

Replaced Tensioner as well.

Did not use factory tool for setting tension of B/S belt.

Also replaced Valve cover gasket (chain guides look a little worn but not bad) and oil pressure sender.

Checked records, no history of motor mounts, but under a quick blip of the throttle it doesn't seem to look bad.

It did not do this until about 200 miles after the job was completed.

Car pulled/pulls VERY strong.

Now for my question. I hear a sort of clatter (Crank and cam did not move during install 110% on this however no lock was used) only at low RPM. Once I get to about 1500-2500 it goes away and the car sounds just like it should. Could having the b/s belt to loose or tight cause any sort of noise (other than the whining (which it is pretty loud))?

I am at a total loss! Rollers? H20 Pump? Tension? I have not taken the covers off yet. I know I probably should do this and check the tension, but I just wanted to see what you guys thought first?

Thanks in advance!!!

Are you sure the Cam / crank postion did not move? I do not think it would cause any noise, maybe just timing issues. If you hear a whine at idle, it is probably the BS belt which is most likely too tight. You should be able to twist the best 90 degrees at the longest straight part of the belt. You should not be able to twisy any more than 90 degrees so check that first.

I am sure.

Having said that, even IF it did move would the sound stay with the engine through the entire RPM range or would the Vario-cam cause this to change? I know it will change the timing but I do not know how much.

Thanks again!!

ok - first things first

is it rhythmic?

does it sound like it is coming from the front, the bottom, the top, or where?

is the clatter at cam speed, crank speed, or what?

how is your oil pressure warm at idle?

have you tried removing the front cover and then firing it up?

have you removed the valve cover to make sure you didn't leave something in there?

It is not rhythmic, almost sounds like it is coming somewhere near the alternator. The sound doesn't change with RPM other than the fact that it completely goes away at about 1500-2500 RPM. My Oil Pressure is right at 2-3 at idle and goes to 4-5 when I am on the pedal. Hope this helps at all.

After working at ImagineAuto and having full access to the lifts I rarely like to jack my car up at home and do anything. And the bad thing is I no longer have access to the lifts!! I guess I am just spoiled. Oh well time to grin and bear laying on my back for a little bit to get the bottom belts off.

Thanks guys!! This place is great, it has kept me from working for a good 2 weeks now! HAHA

i think you left something flying around loose under the front cover - could be that you did not adjust the belt correctly, and it is making contact with either the guide or the cover

Is it possible the lifters have lost pressure from sitting?

I will pull the covers off tonight and find out (hopefully) what is going on. Thanks for all who have given input.

Alright, I finally got off my lazy butt and took the covers off. I never did find anything but, when I put the A/C belt back on I adjusted the belt a little more and problem solved. It seems that my A/C compressor was a little cock wobbled in there. There was a noise that my A/C always made and I just thought that it was the compressor going out. Well now all is good in the world. The compressor is as quiet as it should be and the noise is gone. That is the only thing that I can see was wrong. Timing is dead on, belts have great tension. 90 degrees on the B/S belt and the timing belt is tight with the tensioner. Either that or I am just a little special and should not be touching a car. (some would attest to this being the case.) Well thanks for all of the ideas it is nice to know that one can ask even a "stupid" question and will be treated with respect. Thanks again guys!!! Have a great week!

be VERY careful that you adjusted the belt correctly, with the mounting bolts loose, and then tightened them back up - failure to do this has resulted in a number of broken compressors
