Belt Noise Diagnosis
#1

My D1R Stage 3 supercharger and complete engine rebuild is running very well after ~1,400miles...except for what I am pretty sure is an annoying belt noise.

It is a whistle kind of sound, very noticeable at idle. As rpms go up it gets lost in the other, normal engine noises.

I recently tightened the SC/AC/Alt belt because I had slippage above 4,500rpm. Frankly I don't remember if this noise is better or worse after the adjustment.

I really, really, really don't want to go at this on a trial and error basis because there is so much disassembly required. (You have to take off the whole supercharger to access the cam timing and balance shaft belts.)

So does anyone have any experience with belt noise? Is a whistle too tight or too loose? Do cam timing or balance shaft belts ever whistle? Anyone with a D1R SC ever have this kind of noise? Any ideas for isolating this without disassembly? Could it be something else, like a pulley bearing and if so how would I tell?

How did you know you had slippage? Can you measure your exact tension on the top (or bottom) span with a tool of any kind? I am in the process of re-tensioning mine as part of a trial-and-error exercise but would also appreciate a target tension.

I know I had slippage because I put it on a dyno including recording the boost. The power rise and the boost both stopped rising at about 4,500rpm. I am pretty sure we could also hear the belt squeal during the runs.

I did try to get my P9201 tool on the belt to check it. Frankly there's not really enough length between pulleys to get it on and access is difficult. I think I was around a reading of 14, but I couldn't say how accurate or repeatable this is.

The balance shaft belt will whistle or whine when it's too tight. Are you sure it's not related to the SC? I don't have one, so have no frame of reference.

No such noises with my SC, or any other belts for that matter.

Good feedback. Thanks. Do you know how much you loosened it (turns on the tensioning rod) to get that whistle to go away? After loosening are you certain it's not slipping at high rpm (that noise is a squeal)?

Nor should there be.

I did not do the work, but had the belt replaced.

you do not have to remove the SC to get to the timing and balance belts. after removing the drive belt from the crank pulley, you only have to remove the 2 bolts that connect the black brackets to the mounting plate, and the 2 bolts that connect the 2 black brackets together, and fully back out the 2 long bolts that mount the mounting plate to the engine. then you just pull the unit forward, and you have access just like stock.

flash would you mind posting the simple how to as a technical bulletin or otherwise pinning it? And maybe a few pictures to go with?

Alternatively if someone changes their belts with the SC in can they take a few shots and do a quick write up?

I know I'll need it in the future when it's belt time (like in 6 months). Others likely will as well.

To be safe I am going to print it now...

Thanks
