Windshield replacement
#1

So my windshield has a big crack in it and I'm looking to replace it. Apparently its a custom order part from the dealership and runs a little under $700. Ack!

Is this something I could find from a junker, and if so, is that something that could be easily pulled from a used car, or once they are in they are in and you can't reuse them in another vehicle?

Any suggestions for me?

Thanks!

Mark

You can find them in scrap yards but few people will install them; used windscreens have a habit of breaking when re-installed.

Good Luck

Ok, I just went through this too - I ended up ordering through Sunset aprox $465 + $100 shipping + $200 to get installed - so the toal was $765. Your under $700 sounds like a relatively <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> good deal.

When I started looking the local dealer quoted $850, the guy's that did the install were right around the $765 mark that it ended up costing, but finding a windshield was the problem - there was only one in California and it ended up being scratched. Sunset had to order from Germany as there were none in any dealership inventory (well there was one fully tinted in Atlanta for like $700+ just for the glass) 4-6weeks was the quote and then ship to me ($100 due to insrurance and weight) - reality was about 5 weeks to get it to me.

Bruce Ward has said that Autover is the importer for the USA and their cost was under $200(a couple of years ago) for the glass, also he indicated that they wouldn't sell directly to the public but your glass Co. could contact them and the would sell to them - when I called they said they didn't have any windshields in stock and hadn't for a couple of years - but I would give them a call anyway, they seemed some what confused when I talked to them and you might have better luck and depending on your location even with shipping costs it could be a deal.

Good Luck

Did you file an insurance claim? If I were using insurance and paying my deductible I would have just let them figure out the best solution. I would have just insisted on a Sekurit oem replacement.

If I were paying the entire bill myself then certainly I would shop around.
