BELLY PAN REPLACEMENT
#1

I never have believed in Deja Vue until this last weekend! I was scanning the 968 parts classified, and came upon a string of messages regarding the replacement of the bottom engine cover. I read it because mine was not in the greatest shape, being original, and now brittle! Replacing it was something I would need to do in the sometime future.

So, while messing around with my 4 post lift this last weekend, I managed to get the lip of one of the ramps caught in the belly pan......and with a pop the whole pan broke into several pieces. Deja Vue. I couldn't believe it!

So, now I can no longer put off that job. Which brings me to the point of this post. I called Sunset (recommended in the string of notes I had read this last weekend) to get cost and availability for the cover, only to find that the cover has three parts to it! I've been under my car a lot, but always remembered the cover being a single part. Phil, at Sunset says that there is a front piece that matches up with the front bumper, a larger piece that covers the oil pan and clutch area, and then a sheet metal part. Can you guys confirm that?

I think tha the sheet metal part that he is referring to is the aluminum shroud that traverses right under the rear lip of the oil pan. But, I can't remember the front part that mates up with the front bumper. I do remember the large plastic piece that covers the entire bottom of the engine, though.....that's the piece that I destroyed this last weekend.

So, here's the good and the bad news. The large plastic cover that goes below the engine is only $85, but has to come from Germany (3 to 4 weeks). The smaller piece that mates up with the frong bumper is $265, and Sunset does have that in stock. I don't need the aluminum tray, since mine is fine.

What I can't visualize is the mate up of the main cover and the piece that attachs to the front bumper. What am I missing here?

Comments would be appreciated.

Regards,

Ernie

Thanks for the advice Flash. When I got home tonight I did a more thorough inspection of the belly on the car. It now appears that the middle and rear trays are ok. What was destroyed was the "bat wing". Unfortunately, in the process of being torn from the car, a few of the clips that attach the wing to the front bumper tore out the attach holes in the bumper. Is there a fix for this? It appears that I could re-install the clips and the clips will hold the wing as long as the loading is vertical.....if the wing wants to move rearward, the clips and screws would just pull out again. This may not be much of an issue since it appears that only two of the dozen or so clips experienced this failure mode.

Any suggestions?

Ernie,

Do all 968's come with those covers? I have only the front one that attaches to the bottomof the bumper cover. I had no suspicion that there was anything more.

you could drill new holes

i believe all years came with at least 2 of the pans - not sure exactly where the 3rd one was dropped, but it was not on my 718 94, which leads me to believe it was dropped somewhere early in the 93 run

Ernie, you can repair the torn portion of the bumper as well as the "batwing" cover with a product from Automotive Stores like Pep Boys, Auto Zone, etc. There is J.B. Weld, J.B. Quick, and also a flexible bumper repair kit. They are a two-part epoxy which will flex after curing. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

you might be able to swedge grommets in there too - they might grip enough

Thanks for all the replies to my original post. I did order the bat wing piece out of Sunset. Should be here sometime this next week. I will also research the JB Weld materials.

Incidentally, the issue with my lift that ended up destroying the bat wing was pure stupidity on my part. I had the car off the lift while doing some maintenance on the lift. When I lowered the lift, I apparently did not lower it completly......must have stopped about two inches shy of being on the floor. This caused the ramps to pivot enough to the ground so that the front lips of the ramps pivoted upwards quite a bit. When my son drove the car onto the lift, he hesitated a little bit just as the front wheels cleared the ramp lips. Consequently, the car rolled backwards about a foot or so and as it moved rearward over the ramps, the protruding lips grabbed a small section of the bat wing that was hanging a little bit. That was enough to rip the entire piece loose from the front bumper. In the process, since the piece was age enbrittled, it just shattered into about four pieces.

Hopefully, we all learn from our mistakes!
