Fix for Metal Belly Pan Stripped Stud?
#1

I have a rattle on my car and have now troubleshot it down to the metal belly pan to body stud connections. Here is what I am talking about:

Right now there is a washer and some type of oversized nut on the stud (removed in the picture above), that do not hold the belly pan tight. The threads on the stud are stripped....so the belly pan rattles sometimes. I don't really see a way to get tap on it....how would you suggest fixing it? It's either a M5 or M6 stud.

Any particular repair kit out there? If I could get a hollow stud to fit over it, I could JB Weld it in place and then have threads to bolt the belly pan in place.

The capture nut is item 6 in the image below:

Use a die, as opposed to a tap, to thread it for the next smaller nut…? Probably have to take the pan off to get the die far enough on.

That's what I meant when I wrote tap, using a tap would be very difficult! I don't think it will work, plus I lost my old set years ago....but maybe I could buy a cheap one at autozone for the job. It has to be threaded almost all the way to the body, that's why I'm thinking it won't work.

10 cents for the part, and a quick trip to the exhaust shop and you have a bolt welded in its place

Or you could remove the pan. The s2 did not have the metal pan (the turbo did), not sure why it was used on the 968.

it promotes better underbody aerodynamics, and facilitates cooling. not essential for normal street driving, but makes a difference on the track.

I've used these with great luck. I don't know if there is enough surface area to get a good bond once the stud is cut off and the area prepped.

They're not metric but they do solve a problem.
