I take back everything I ever said about " the ugliest I have ever seen ". We now have a new champion <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wacko.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

No doubt, from a 968 perspective it belongs on the "wall of shame". From a Vanagon perspective, those seats are a big improvement over the stock seats.

I know those seats!!! Yup, my old seats from the parts car. Classic Gray matched his Vanagon interior pretty darned close. It's riding on 968 C2 5 spoke 16" wheels too!

Flash, you are right. Although there is one side of me as a suave multibillionaire around town in my 968 driving at 100 mph between red lights, hitting "end" on my cell phone when slam-dunk promising startups call for a couple more mil, I am also the long-haired nature lover cruising without a care, at a max of 60 mph where there are no red lights, sink deep into the sleeping bag, watching a billion stars, and no noise at all. I often wonder which turd side of me is polishing the other side, but I really like owning the combination of a 968 and a Vanagon; neither is better than the other. (Side note my Vangon Syncro has doubled in value in the last 3-4 years compared to stagnant 968 prices.)
On the other hand you are also right, putting arm rests on those seats sure looks like a turd, but may be quite comforable. Remember it is true to the Porsche spirit: "function over form" (e.g. 911). But us VW Bus (Vanagon) guys are an invovative bunch -- there are really nice recaros and other seats that work well in the Vangon -- but then, that would be too commerical and not sufficiently improvising. For the price of Recaros, I could buy 1,000 doses of....for my friends at burning man...ha-ha. With Vanagons ya gotta improvise and and carry a AAA card at all times with the 200 mile tow option!
