What's the Ultimate 968 Seat?
#1

Saw another seat question and it got me to thinking...aside from the fixed CS seats, what was the most optioned 968 available? 8way power, leather, heated, and with head rest crests?

I would think that the 996 Sport seat would be a good choice.

12 way power, heated, full leather Sport Seat with deviating stitching & head rest crests would be most optioned....unless I'm missing something. However, i doubt such a seat exists in anyone's car.

The ultimate seat for me would be leather with Porsche script cloth inserts....heated.

fox - i've seen scripted inserts on leather outers, so you could have your stitching, crested headrests, scripted inserts, and then of course the 12 way heated sport seats

i have seen 12 way power heated sport seats in a 968 - they were black - very nice - very heavy - pretty sure they were not original, though

i have seen original heated 8 way sport seats - very rare though, and not listed in the sales material as available options (like quite a few things), but was definitely available

Any thoughts on 928 12way heated seats being reskinned and refoamed as 968 seats? I understand the mounting is the same, but is the seat chassis? Is the 928 bottom cushion higher? I guess is that the 928 has more head room.

i know a lot of the seats swap back and forth, so they might too - pretty easy to tell with a tape measure though - rail spacing and offset, as well as clearance height are easy to measure if they are in front of you, but hard to get somebody to do if they are at a seller's location

banditsc has a 928 though, and could probably measure when he gets a chance

Bob,

The only additional seat option you could get from the factory on a North American 968 sport seat was the heat option. No 8-ways or lumbar on Sport seats. There are actually a few heated sports seat cars out there (42 cabs, 78 coupes).

nobody said anything about from the factory, but rather "available" - just because they didn't do something in germany does not mean it was not original - a lot of things happened in the south carolina facility, which is still technically the factory, as those things could be done, cars re-stickered, and delivered as original - as an example, that's where the repaint happened when things went wrong on the ship - standard industry practice

you could have ordered anything you wanted - just because the sales literature did not list it as one of the "normal" options did not mean you could not order it - there are plenty of things that were ordered and done to the car long after it left germany, but prior to delivery to the customer - porsche has always been very good about telling you that you could get anything you wanted, including things from other models - you just had to pay for it

they still hold to that too - you can get 928 seats in your brand new cayman, if you want them

That would explain that copper-colored 968 cab that you saw.

i doubt it - i pulled carpet up and everything to make sure the paint was original - i did this to every car i was looking at back then - to do that kind of a job, the entire car would have had to have been completely disassembled - this was not a color change - it just isn't in your records

as i said, it is likely one of the first 60 numbers - they made the cars - likely one of the first few that was not part of the testing and crashing procedures - in subsequent years, as there were no safety or emissions changes which would have required additional DOT submission, the cars would not be completed and the chassis set aside - some of those we have seen pop up over the years

this is all pretty standard practice

Well, you never know, and if SC was the custom shop you say it was then who knows???

BTW, do you have a photo of a 911/928 in that copper color? If so, can you post it.

it was the import point (still says "Porsche Road"), and where a lot of prep work was done - i've heard some pretty crazy stories about stuff that went on there

it was a 924 color - here is a shot:

It was awesome. I toured it back in its day, and had several friends employed there including the guy who printed EVERY window sticker, affixed it to the window, and shipped the cars. He is still with Porsche Vehicle Logistics to this day. If you own a 968, he has sat in it! I am working on getting permision to post the story of the journey and prep procedures the cars took from Germany to the dealer - hopefully coming soon.

chudson, That would be great to here some of the back story from your contact. Especially if there are some pictures to go with that story. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

its is also possibe that this is one of the few paint to sample cars......We dont know what everyone was yet. So this copper car could really be the rarest north american color..a true 1 of 1...
