I take back everything I ever said about " the ugliest I have ever seen ". We now have a new champion <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wacko.png" class="smilie" alt="" />
I bet you could get a cup holder in the end of that arm rest <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

No doubt, from a 968 perspective it belongs on the "wall of shame". From a Vanagon perspective, those seats are a big improvement over the stock seats.
They'll sure come in handy for all those high spee-,... never mind.
Geeeze, I hope that thing has at least a 914 engine upgrade.
I know those seats!!! Yup, my old seats from the parts car. Classic Gray matched his Vanagon interior pretty darned close. It's riding on 968 C2 5 spoke 16" wheels too!

YIPES!!! that is terrible! I sure would like the cup holders though. One thing I hate is no were to put my cu of tes in the 968
i know roland has a soft spot for the vanagon, but this is what i call "turd polishing"
Flash, you are right. Although there is one side of me as a suave multibillionaire around town in my 968 driving at 100 mph between red lights, hitting "end" on my cell phone when slam-dunk promising startups call for a couple more mil, I am also the long-haired nature lover cruising without a care, at a max of 60 mph where there are no red lights, sink deep into the sleeping bag, watching a billion stars, and no noise at all. I often wonder which turd side of me is polishing the other side, but I really like owning the combination of a 968 and a Vanagon; neither is better than the other. (Side note my Vangon Syncro has doubled in value in the last 3-4 years compared to stagnant 968 prices.)
On the other hand you are also right, putting arm rests on those seats sure looks like a turd, but may be quite comforable. Remember it is true to the Porsche spirit: "function over form" (e.g. 911). But us VW Bus (Vanagon) guys are an invovative bunch -- there are really nice recaros and other seats that work well in the Vangon -- but then, that would be too commerical and not sufficiently improvising. For the price of Recaros, I could buy 1,000 doses of....for my friends at burning man...ha-ha. With Vanagons ya gotta improvise and and carry a AAA card at all times with the 200 mile tow option!
lol - i get it. i have armrests in the denali and use them from time to time.
my thought about the turd polishing is bothering with that car at all. i know they have a loyal following, and they are nuts about them, but i never thought much of them when they were new, and certainly don't think much now. for me it has been that way about all of the vw busses. i just don't get it. they probably spent more on those seats than the car is worth.
The VW bus in Brazil is affectionately called "a mother's heart" because "there is always room for one more"! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/clap.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
While that particular vehicle may not be for me, I think any introspective 968 aficionado should be able to understand how someone might take a liking to a vehicle of otherwise dubious merit and value. And this certainly isn't the only vehicle that people spend outrageous sums of money to outfit. Look at any kid in the VW crowd that shows up at Porsche events with body-color wheels and lights, "euro-style" wipers and body kits that would embarrass a Transformer.
Dubious? Can't others just be plain wrong? We often speak about the compliments we receive on our cars. I listened to other Porsche owners wax philosophically about the 968 at DE's last year. Mind you they were no longer driving a 968. Between snobbery, elitism and low production lies the answer to comments on the 968. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder! I don't think the Vanagon would ever be interesting to me but it sure has its own panache. My first car was a 72 or 73 green dodge dart that had been in a flood. Totally covered. It was perhaps not the coolest looking vehicle and had a host of problems as a result of the flood, but it was my car and a source of a great deal of cool adventures. Bet ya as a young man you could get comfortably laid and turn it into a real operators vehicle. Lol
The Vanagon of course
like i said, it has its following. i just don't get it. perhaps if i lived somewhere remote, where gas was expensive, the AWD version might make sense, but here, with gas as cheap as it is, and the roads all paved, i'm at a loss to understand the attraction. it's slow, handles poorly, and isn't that comfortable or quiet.
but i don't have one, so i don't have to get it.
