A sign of the times, we attended a Zoom Bris for my nephew's first born son this morning.
I learned that in zoom business meetings if you blow into your wine-filled cup, everyone will think you’re doing that to cool off your hot tea or coffee in there .. just sayin’..

On a sadder note, there are mumblings here in Fr that because the infection numbers are again increasing, deconfinement for Christmas is still unsure; presently we are to be let loose on the 15th. My take on this is that we'll be let out for at least a few days over Christmas; my reasoning being that everyone is going to do what they do over Christmas (maybe slightly more subdued this time), so to make it an offense will just turn everyone into petty criminals: crazy!
Most ( 90% ) of California is now in a shelter in place / shut down order as strict as it ever was at the beginning of this nightmare . We’re talking about nearly 40 million people, and millions of businesses, countless small businesses which are the staples of the state’s communities support infrastructure. I don’t want to turn this into a political discussion, but we now know what measures need to be taken to avoid the spread of infections, so punish those who do not comply , or fail to enforce compliance, but shutting down businesses which are observing all the rules , is and idiotic, asinine, and misguided approach . IMHO. We’re throwing the baby out with the bat water .
I agree, there is greater understanding of the measures which reduce transmission. Also the initial argument was about protecting the health system from being swamped.... 12 months later no contingency in place??
The government response has been incoherent from the beginning. States are responsible for their citizens and decisions made. When you have political elites who look condescendingly down at us as if we are all nitwits and have no consequences for their actions what we have is what we deserve. How many of these politicians are businessman who had to make a payroll? The destruction of small businesses is not something you can fix by raising taxes to make up for their loss.
While it is true that the States are responsible for their citizens, we have a Federal Government which has the overarching responsibility to see that government requires are uniformly and equitably applied. Our Federal Government leadership abrogated it's responsibility. The States that got off the dime early, as we did in Oregon, managed to avoid the worst of COVID, keeping infections and deaths relatively low. While our infection rate has increased somewhat as have the number of deaths, we haven't had to resort to a complete lockdown. Wear a mask, wash your hands, stay socially distant. How hard can it be?
In the event of a national crisis ( this is most certainly one, arguably second only to war on our own mainland ) States’ rights , obligations , etc. are secondary to Federally-imposed measures which must be implemented consistently and universally . It’s that simple.
I watched the finals of the European autumn rugby, France/England, on line. There were one or two thousand spectators at the ground ..... mostly crowded beside each other and mostly without masks. I didn't realize it was a negative IQ test that permitted the purchase of tickets
Chris while I agree with you I believe that would have prompted 50 lawsuits against that mandate.

I’ve seen a handful of other sports ( mostly soccer ) in various stadiums where it didn’t seem as anyone cared..there may have been less than 25 % density in the overall capacity , but the spectators were all bunched together in a few sections . Almost none with masks on, in spite of seating less than 1-2 ft away from the next guy . Ugh, “ YOU CAN’T FIX STUPID “
People make choices for a variety of reasons. Some good some bad. Some informed some not. The flow of info since the beginning has been contradictory from all segments. Even educated people are confused myself included. Although I don’t count myself as educated. Frustration is high as is fatigue. I would only hope those people get checked for the virus after the event. The people didn’t make the call. The sports owners and there federations did. $$$ is the engine of this not stupid people.
In the case of COVID, there is one thing that may well fix stupid. If one is opposed to masks for political reasons, personal reasons or just not smart enough to understand the scientific and health reasons for masks, social distancing and hand washing, COVID will eventually take you out of the gene pool, thereby fixing stupid.

I used to think that was a solution in my field as well. Then I realized that these "Darwin Award" recipients had already procreated, thereby guaranteeing the next generation of "America's Funniest Home Video" producers. We need to catch them when they are younger!

There's a movie called, I think, "Idiocracy"... Predicting, as MCL suggests, what happens when the brightest and best concentrate on high power careers and the not so bright concentrate on having children. It's quite a funny film.
Well, we are free men again here in France, well almost as there is an 8pm curfew ..... but sadly pretty much everything is closed. I'm not sure of Paris, but down south all restaurants and bars are closed but takeaways are possible if your town/village has such facilities. So today I at least was able to go out for a spontaneous drive in the 968. 12C and cloudy but who cares? Top down, scarf, heater on full blast, good to do it, onward and upwards!

I find that a spirited drive helps me to escape the doldrums too. I call it G-Force Therapy, and it is good for a number of ailments, including breaditis, which is an excessive swelling of the bank account.
