ANOTHER STARTER PROBLEM
#21

If you still need a daily driver, sell the P and buy a used honda to hold you over.

Sell the Porsche? Oh I hope not, just finished my Garage-Ma-Hall, a 968 shrine!

Car will not start with a jump.

It was verified that the engine temp is normal and fan is coming on, just gauge goes wacky?!

Incidentally the current mechanic said last week he had a 968 come in with guess what...a problem starting.

Could the mfg of the starters be producing bum starters?

Guage problems mean a short. I have seen the starter wire short out on the clutch slave bleeder bolt before....

Check those alternator wires. Bosch starters, even rebuilds, are fairly hearty. Only thing that really bothers them is being too close to the exhaust header which causes the solenoid to stick. Easy to test the starter. Just jump it from below.

As for selling, I wouldn't either.........

3 Batteries, 2 Starters, and then it was diagnosed to have a bad alternators. Alternator replaced.

Picked car up Sunday night, it ran great and then today same problem. Temp gauge spikes, power gauge dips below "12". Turn car off. Car is dead.

WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM?

ugh, I lost my company car when I was laid off, I cannot continue to have this issue?!

Help! Thanks, Steve

i am seriously thinking short or bad main cable - first check the battery with a known working meter (not the one in the car) - if it has voltage, but the car is dead, one of your main cables is not completing the circuit

are you anywhere near pete?

Thanks Flash

..at this point I will have to plan to visit Pete.

I will also check out what you suggest. This car never had this problem until I took it to the dealer!

i had a no start, dead car problem - had voltage at the battery, but nothing anywhere else - turned out to be a very bad connection at the primary ground - then i had a low charging problem - turned out to be a loose nut at the main line at the back of the alternator

sometimes it's simple

EUREKA!

Mechanic found a problem with the main ground between the battery and the block. Apparently it is working intermittently. When it was first tested, it was fine, but the mechanic caught it in the act and we are now waiting for the cable to come in. Again 3 batteries, 2 starters, and an alternator and it was a lousy cable. I am hoping to have the car back this week. I have missed the whole summer and part of the fall. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> I can't wait to get it back, get Steve from A-Z to detail it, and maybe take a day off from work to go look at leaves change color somewhere in PA.

"Ryan: I was having starter problems last year. At times the starter would not engage the teeth to the flywheel all the way and I would get that wonderful grinding sound. I took the starter out and cleaned/lubed it. It has worked perfectly ever since. Don't by a new one just because is looks like the original. Mine was as well. It is an easy fix really. Give it a shot."

"nissanite: I had a problem with the nose shaft bushing that hold the front of the starter shaft. It has nothing to do with the battery. The bushing had worn & allowed the starter teeth to miss the flywheel."

"Anchorman: It also could be a battery issue - caused by frayed cables running to the starter that are shorting out and bringing your battery down. The cable from the battery to the starter is known to deteriorate, exposing conductors that can touch various places and kill the battery charge. Either way, you need to get underneath and look (and, probably, clean)."

I have also hot start problem, which results in starter missing the teeth (It sounds like it, starter runs nicely, but then it stops spinning the engine and whirls free?) Would you have spare part nbrs for the

a. starter cable (battery -> starter)

b. starter shaft

I'm most likely to replace starter with new one, because the starter is old anyways -> with new battery car will give less problems in next years

Could also replace the cable + shaft during same job.

Is starter easy to remove, or should I use mechanic? I have bunch of tools, but havent done repairs so much myself.

Thanks for your input!

Br.,

Matti

In addition, is there any difference between Bosch starter and original Porsche starter?

A part number and the Porsche name on the starter, the original should be a Bosch. I have heard Sunset Porsche has good prices on them.
