Thought I might get your collective opinion on the value and desireabilty of a black/black coupe with 180K miles.
It’s a Tiptronic. There is a stack of receipts that show a significant amount of repairs and maintenance (mostly maintenance) over the last 10K Miles.
Interior is great, especially for the miles. Exterior has a couple of small dings and scratches. It drives tight and true, shifts well, etc.
It has newer belts (complete service w/water pump, etc.), brakes, radiator, tires, etc., etc. All within the last 10-15K, but some of the work is 8 years old now. It’s had very few miles the last 5 years.
Thoughts?

Quote:if the belts are more than 4 years old, regardless of how few miles, plan on changing them
as for value, probably about $10k-$12k at best, and that is assuming the rest of the car is really clean well maintained. likely it's really more like $8k-$9k. the tip hurts a lot in most people's minds. also, that's a high mileage car, and unless you have paperwork or a leakdown test to show otherwise, you are probably looking at a valve job and probably an often overlooked trans service at a minimum.
Thanks Flash,
Belt are about 15K miles and 9 years, so they’ll be needed.
The transmission has been serviced and it shifts well, and the engine felt every bit as strong as my 40K mile cab (but then the cab is a couple hundred pounds heavier).
No smoke on startup or driving, etc. Due to the miles, would a leak down or compression test be in order?
I’m trying to find out if there are records for the first 165K Miles on the car. It was reportedly a daily driven commuter in California.
On a 968 with that many miles, what components should I look for to see if they’ve been replaced? Perhaps suspension components? One CV joint has been replaced by current owner.
I am impressed that everything functions on the car. All electrical, guages, sunroof, hatch latch, windows, locks, etc. Between maintenance and repairs the owner put over $12K in it the last 9 years/15K Miles, including a few repairs on some of these electrical/body items.
I would use a car like this as a daily driver and try to use it as far into the winter as possible which is part of the appeal of a high mileage mechanically stable car like this.

Quote:a compression test won't necessarily show much, since carbon buildup often increases the readings. a leakdown test is the only real way to determine the condition of the rings and valves
Thanks, this makes good sense to me.
I’m planning to sit down with the owner this week to go through his maintenance receipts with him The receipts I’ve already seen show about 16K miles during his ownership but he swears that this cannot be correct and that actual miles he’s added must be closer to 4-5K. I know the odometers are famous for being brittle and breaking, but I’m wondering if anyone has ever experienced an odometer that added “phantom” miles by maybe turning an extra 1000 mile digit when other numbers are turning over or some such malfunction.

Re: "pca - yup - never had a warm fuzzy from those guys at any event i have attended, regardless of region. lol - of course, it could be me", I have to say that I have been part of the Maverick region here in TX, I have received nothing but acceptance and earnest interest in my 968. Photographers are always looking to include it in social media event postings on Facebook and I always have people approach me asking about the car. Given your comment, I am happy to report that my experience has been very positive.
I agree with Craig....we've had some cultural changes in the Mav region and I have to say it's much more enjoyable to be involved than it was 10 years ago. Mavs and Mochas has been a big part of that. Craig, I look forward to meeting you and seeing your cab at an event soon!
