968 coupe is the new 968
#1

Many of the new sports cars we've seen in the last three or four years have, and continue to come out with hatchbacks, an encouraging sign for those of us who drive coupes and concerned that the car might look just a bit dated because of that feature, but after just seeing the brand new Ferrari with one big-ass hatchback, the 968 hardtop is even more "vindicated" and its owners likely to face increasing " is this a new model Porsche ?! " questions we get from time to time

Too bad it does nothing for its market value though..

We still have a very modern design.

The hatchback is such a practical, logical design, that I don't understand why they ever waned in popularity. Pretty timeless, if you asked me, just like the 968 (other than the goofy unhidden popup headlights [Image: huh.gif])

I like the headlights. I always thought they were the best looking part of the 928, and I think they look much better that the pop ups on the 924/944.

I guess it's the fact that they're laying flat on their backs, looking up at the sky when not in use, that seems to strange to me. Plus pop-ups in general are very outdated. Having said that, they do blend in pretty well with the rest of the front end, so I don't find them to be hideous or anything, just a little odd. But they do "identify" the 968, and as such distinguish it from the rest of the FEWCFC (Front Engined Water Cooled Four Cylinder) family.

The coupe has those classic and timeless lines. The lights are just a feature that look and make it different. Course the lows leave a lot to be desired! I was just with a bunch of cabs in Newtown and although they are nice, I still like my coupe.

Yeah, I'm the same way. I like the Cab, and have owned a few convertibles, so I do like the soft top style, but overall, I just find the lines of the coupe to be better integrated, and they seem to flow a little better. But that's just me (OK, and a bunch of others, no doubt); this stuff is so highly subjective.

I must admit that when I first saw the coupe I was not terribly enamored of its lines and liked the cab much better. It has grown on me a lot and I imagine that driving a coupe (never been in one if you can believe that - all the locals here drive cabs) is a blast as it must feel very buttoned down. The cab always feels a bit, er, flexible.

But, to play contrarian in defense of cabs, the coupes make a real droning racket inside, largely because the hatch reflects a lot of the road noise back into the cabin. I imagine the cabs, being immune to that problem, can be pretty pleasant to drive from an aural standpoint. Never been in one, though.

"Coupes rumble and cabs rattle... Both leak"

If you mean engine oil, power steering fluid, antifreeze, transmission oil, etc., then yes, definitely. Haven't had a whole lot of problem with rain getting in my couple, unless you count the time I was caught in a surprise downpour with the sunroof off...

There's two kinds of Porsches. Ones that leak, and ones that are going to. So far I've been lucky.

Cloud I have driven my coupe with the windows open at speed without this noise problem you refer to. A rattle or two now and then but at 20 years old certainly to be expected!

Opening the windows helps drown out the noise I'm referring to! I'm talking about the annoying rumbling/droning reflection of the road noise in the cabin. I once rode in a 2000 BMW M coupe, which has a similarly shaped hatch as the 968, and it made the exact same noise. If you drive the car mainly alone, you may not notice it, but try driving with a passenger sometime, with the windows up and sunroof on, at, say, 45 mph around town. That's why I like to drive with the sunroof off most of the time - the whooshing of the air drowns out the rumbling.

No doubt the 968 cab has some nice lines.

But somehow the coupe appears more special or unique. It always reminds me of a classic Ferrari, older Aston Martin, maybe even the Shelby Daytona, perhaps the Porsche 904. When I feel really dumb, I convince myself the 968 Coupe is the closest thing to a DB9, the car with incredibly superb styling (Hey Dan, isn't that silly?). Dan and I are planning a startup in social networking, and with no profit at all, we will sell it and buy DB9s for everyone in our families.

I miss cabs, had some, one summer I didn't put the top up on my MGB for about 3-4 months, and that was daily commuting. 911 Targa was great for open motoring, but leaky, noisy, smelly, bumpy. But clearly the 968 Coupe is more GT than sports car, and that GT feel is what pleases me these days.

Could not have said it better myself, Roland But yes, elevating a 968 to the level of a DB9 is just silly, as much as I wish it was true and that some faint comparison between the two could be drawn..

BTW, unless it's an early 60s Caddilac with rear wings, and with longhorns attached to the front grill, no other car should be a convertible ! Well, ok, except for the 427 Cobra perhaps, that one would look particularly ridiculous with a hard top on it.

Personally, I find the cab to have a more timeless look and the coupe to look a little dated. Also, the cab doesn't scream out "Porsche", but rather, "what is that, it's cool!" Of course that what makes horse racing.

IMO, the cab would have been even better looking if they would have extended both the "cheeks" and the "hips" by another 1" or so.. those lines have a much more pronounced appearance in the coupe design, making it look significantly wider and curvier than the cab.. to my eyes anyway..
