968 Values

In my neck of the woods I don’t see a lot of 968’s at the various tracks I go to.

I agree with RAP....we have a pretty active track in the Dallas-Ft Worth area and I know of only one 968 that was being tracked.  Most 968s I know of in the area are coveted by their owners and are being properly maintained.

We held a PCA related event last year that celebrated the 968 and interestingly of the 14 confirmed owners in the area half were coupes and the other cabs.

At this month's  Sotheby  ( Monterey )  auction , among  nose-bleed priced classics , with many of them in the tens of millions $ each ,  they also have a 1987 944s with 15 K miles on it,  at an auction est. bid pricing of $ 30 K - $40 K , and a 1995 928 GTS , with just 4 K miles on it, at $ 125 K - 150 K.    No 968 anywhere in the lots,  but it's still encouraging to see water cooled P-cars of the late 80s and 90s start to generate those kind of prices.  If a 944s with 15 K miles sells in that 30K--40K range, I'd expect a 968 with similar mileage to fall in a $ 75 K - $ 100 K range ..  Arguably, I'd say it should even surpass the 928 GTS price point,. but the market demand for those seems to be much stronger than for 968s.

Lol, " BELIEVED to be 58,000 miles " ?! But yes, it would be good to know what the sold price ends up being and if it sets any standard , good or bad. Odd that so many buyers looking for water cooled Porsches , whether a rare 924 S, or a 944 turbo , or 944s2, or a 928 know what they're all about, but totally clueless when it comes to 968s, the absolute gem of the bunch .

I'll put up my tiptronic on BAT in the next month or so, after I list it here on the forums first, of course.. .   So we'll see how that fares , considering it's not only supercharged ( stage 3 )  but also has a completely rebuilt engine   ( top to bottom ) with less than about 5 K miles on it .  The rest of the car has about 125 K miles on it.     No idea as to what the reserve should be, everyone has an opinion on that, so I'd be glad to get some input from you guys also..

I doubt that non 968 people will understand or appreciate your car or it’s mods. Unless you need to sell it keep the reserve high.

I've been saying this for years but no one has yet decided to be the first to try it with the 968. Just as a latest example of marketing psychology, Peloton bikes whose average price was about $ 1,200 and whose sales were sluggish, prompted the CEO to DOUBLE the price ( without any changes to the bike ) just as an experiment to see what happens, and guess what ?! Sales are surging at the new $ 2,400 price point like never before. My 968 tip which I'll be selling , is really not a shining example of the model, so I can't ask silly money for it , but if I were to consider selling the other car, as an experiment I'd list it at $ 75 K or even more , just for the heck of it . Don't laugh , I was recently offered $ 50 K for it , and flatly turned that down without even a blink / second thought . That car is not for sale , at any price ( well, maybe short of $ 250 K ) , but some of you with 968s which are in great shape, and if you're who willing to part with them, should an offer you can't refuse materialize, might want to list it for some absurd price at perhaps double the market value, and see what happens . You could be the catalyst for these cars value to surge . Remember the mentality of the buying public ; if it's unusually expensive there here must be a good reason for that . It worked for Peoloton, and for several other companies before them, so why not for private sales also ?

I may actually test that theory with my house and list it at triple the market value , since the real estate buying frenzy here has lost any sense of rhyme or reason , logic, common sense , and all that ..

I like Dan's idea, let's list our cars on eBay for some insane prices and see what happens.

If nothing else, it might cause the low end cars to list higher and raise the profile of the entire line.

Everyone I speak to who used to have a 968 regrets selling theirs. Except Flash of course! Only 4600 or so came into North America so regardless of what you think about our cars there is a supply and demand issue here. We all suffer from a low lack of demand which affects price. If you wait will the price go up? Who knows. The one certainty is the 4600 number does not grow larger. It only grows smaller. Some of us own these cars because we love the drivability and feel of them. Others don’t!

If someone were to offer me an obscene amount of money I would think about it. Yet the final decision, baring the immediate financial need for money, would be more likely based upon whether I still enjoyed driving the car. Another issue is the availability of a good mechanic. Max is a total of 8 hours away. Two four hour round trips at high speed. This is a pain in the ass. Yet I still enjoy the car and suffer silently through it. Add the track car into this mix and you might feel bad for poor poor pitiful me.

I will keep mine until the trouble is more than the enjoyment.

lol - while i don't truly "regret" selling both of mine, i wish i could have kept them.  before i moved to los angeles, i would just keep cars, rather than selling them.  i had to learn to sell them though, because storage space was so crazy expensive.  in a perfect world, i would have a stable full of cars.  i had 12 when i decided to move to LA.  all classics and fully restored.
