924/944/968 production numbers: 968 is the lowest
#1

From the book "Original 924/944/968"

924 (1976 - 1985):  110,427

924 Turbo (1979 - 1982):  13,351

924S (1986 - 1988):  16,669

944  (1982 - 1989):  117,790

944 Turbo (1985 - 1991):  25,245

944S / S2 (1987 - 1991): 33,091

968 (1992 - 19995):  `12,776

I never would have guessed that in all of these categories the 968 was lowest total production.   But the 968 is probably not the most rare today, probably the 924 Turbo (931) is the rarest, simply because nobody wants them anymore.

These number are not correct. The total number of 968's is just below 12000. I have to lookup the exact number.

The most rare road legal 4 cilinder car is obviously the below:

968 Turbo S (1993 - 1994): 14

Followed by:

924 Carrera GTS (1981): 59

924 Carrera GT (1981): 406

944 Turbo Cabriolet (1991): 525

etc.

well.............

some of have seen some cars that are not supposed to exist, so the real numbers are in question.  for example, we know there are more Turbo RS cars out there than 4, but they were never registered, so they don't appear on any normal database.  there are also quite a few that were in the "in house" list that made their way out into the public, but through abnormal channels, so again not in the normal database.

still, if you look even at the above, and factor in the percentage of the oddball variations relative to the entire line (i.e. 924 GTS out of the entire 924 line, 944 turbo cab out of the entire 944 line), the 968 still holds its title

not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing yet.  exclusivity is cool.  supporting something that exclusive maybe not.

As I recall, the first 60 VINs in each year were reserved for the factory. There has been some discussion about whether any of the 60 were released to the public. That not withstanding, there were more thatn 12,000 total 968s produced (12,536?).

I find it interesting that PNA sold 7800 911's in 1995, compared to around 625 of the 968, but people still think the 911 is more collectable. Sure, many of those 911's were scrapped as a result of that snap oversteer that made them famous, but it just seems that 968s should be worth a lot more than they are.
