Production data from Porsche Germany
#1

I intended to post this in the "Reading Room", but I guess my rookie status would not allow it. Perhaps someone could transfer it over there.

At any rate, I contacted Porsche in Germany regarding production data on our cars - I have been to all the sites I could find, but have never seen any specific production numbers regarding how many cars were built for each exterior color from 92-95. I have enclosed the response from them below. I find it unbelievable that the only archives they have for this information are individual "hard copy" data cards - That's crazy! I mean we are not talking about 1892-1895 - It just was not that long ago.........anyway, I gave it a shot. If anyone has seen or has access to this info - it would be much appreciated.

My letter blah, blah asking for the following information or if they could point me towards it.

1992 Exterior Color # coupes US # cabs US # coupes (ROW) # cabs (ROW)
1993
1994
1995

We have seen production data as a total, but really would like to see how
many were made of each exterior color i.e I have a 1993 Wimbledon Green Cab
( I know total is 414 for all colors of cabs for US in '93)but members
would really like to know how many were made of their particular color. Any
information you could provide me will be much appreciated.

(ROW) = rest of world

Dear Mr. Steinauer,

thank you for your request. Unfortunately we are not able, to provide you
with the requested information. We do not have a digitalised version of the
car informations in one databank. Therefore the effort would be too big, to
check all production cards by hand and count each colour. We kindly ask for
your understanding.

Kind regards

If your looking for that data, the 968 Registry has all that info for the cabs, and the coupes are in process.

Yes, I have seen that info on the Registry. However, unless I'm looking at something else - it is data for "registered" cars only, which only covers 29% of production according to info on the PDF file.

Pauli,

Not true, the Cab data is now complete and Jeff Coe is working toward finalizing the Coupe data by April of this year.

they do have the data at porsche - it is serial number by serial number though - they aren't easy about letting it all out there, and in fact have said as recently as 2 weeks ago that they will prosecute anyone who publishes it or provides it in any form (website or email or anything) without their expressed permission in writing, which they have said they will not give - the reasoning is that it would negate the need for anyone to get a "certificate of authenticity" for which they charge a tidy sum

they are very aggressive about their intellectual property and information - they have a very public record of prosecuting cases which most would think would amount to nothing of consequence

i am negotiating a compromise that we can publish here, but it will take some time to sort it out

lol Porsche really holds onto that type of info that tightly? for cars that are not even in production anymore?
Sounds like the Porsche rep replied that it would be too labor intensive. Since Porsche just went thru the aquisition, they are probably trying to cut costs etc. lol

Jay,

I guess I'm missing something - I'm going to 968register.org, then "related info", then "968 cabriolet registry" pdf. Is there another area that has the information you are referring to? This pdf file definately seems to be "registered" only. He shows 601 cars out of 2008 - about 29% of the production run.

Thanks,

Paul

968 guy - there are 2 simultaneous conversations going on with porsche - pauli had one and i am having one

yes, they do hold onto it that tightly - they sell the information one car at a time for about $100 in the form of a "certificate of authenticity" - that is why they said they would prosecute anyone who lets it out without expressed written permission - it's money out of their pockets - you have to remember that porsche makes as much money on the support of their cars as they do on sales of them - this is serious business

pauli - the complete info has not been "published" there yet - jeff has sorted the north american cab list out and is working on the north american hardtop list - no updates have been made on that site for a long time, and it now seems that it is highly unlikely, given the attitude at porsche, that they will be posted there or anywhere else

another thing to think about is that with the serial number of a car, you can get most of a person's personal information - it is incredibly easy - for that reason alone, publishing any information that connects a serial number to a person should be considered carefully

Yeay, I could see the potential issues w/ the vin#'s etc..esp in this day and age unfortunately. I have just always been curious how many cars like mine were made. I know they only made the Wimbledon green in '93 - and just wondered how many cabs were made in US/CN and (row). Oh well, not the end of the world. I just didn't realize that Porsche was so tight w/ their info - but as you say, if it's something that they could make a buck on, they would be more receptive.

like i said though, i am discussing a compromise with them that would not cost them certificate sales nor publish vin specific info - i think it's going to take a while though to get it worked out - we definitely want that info here - this is where it belongs

Does anybody have any news regarding production data status? Seems like there was perhaps a copyright type of issue w/ Porsche not wanting or allowing this info to be printed? I just went to Registry at Rennlist, and nothing new added to their site. I still question whether or not each of our cars data is actually on a physical card at Porsche like I was told from one of the reps in Germany.

i've been too busy with the supercharger project to focus on the production info

i'm also trying to stay clear of the threatened legal action against those who are disseminating the information without clearance from PCNA (not to be confused with PCA) - it's apparently a larger and more complicated problem than i imagined, with privacy issues, and even patriot act complications

there are a couple of ways to get the information:

1. you can track it one by one a vin at a time, but that gets into ugly legal stuff, as while it is on record with DMV, it is NOT public record

2. you can get it from an employee at porsche who has access, but again, that gets ugly for anyone caught involved in giving away their property - the employee will be fired (and it's apparently very easy to figure out who did it) and the perpetrator will be sued

but steps are being taken to make this the official and exclusive non-factory related repository of the information - it is just a slow process, and behind a few other projects for me

Looks like a pretty comprehensive book with pictures of the options and in all the different color options. Wish it was available in English, still might be worth it to look at the pictures.
