Thoughts on the 924 Turbo?
#1

Someone offered me a 924 Turbo, essentially for free. Supposedly it's in good condition. I'm not looking for a car right now, but I'm not offered free cars all that often. I'm just wondering if it might be more hassle than it's worth. I know nothing of the 924 Turbos, but I'll bet I can get some good advice around here.

If it's the average 924, you don't want it. You think the plastic and rubber is crispy on your 968? Just wait until you get in the 924 and everything starts falling to bits around you. Not to mention the years and years of "previous owner" maintenance you'd have to overcome. Correction: discover and overcome.

Expensive to repair, and takes a lot of repairing...However, fun to drive. They have heat issues because of the turbo.

I'd take it though, and see what it needs.

No inter cooler and old engine management. But a light weight car. So, if you want to spend some spanner time and make it more modern, it could be a real sleeper. The 924 Carrera GTS was putting out around 300HP, so even with old electronics, it can be done. Imaging what a bit more compression, more modern turbo, intercooler, etc might be possible of.

But to be devil's advocate - will you get your money back - probably not. Will it ever be a classic, nope (the Carrera GT and GTS were, and may continue to be, but likely their prices will come down).

Also called a 931 ... I had one for 7 years, daily driver. A very nice car, think of it as a junior 968 because of less power, around 150 HP. Overall the fit and finish were about like the 968, but again "less" in a variety of categories such as: A/C doesn't work as well, dashboard less usable, horrible OEM sound system, no power seats. The largest problem is the turbo itself: had poor oil circulation, and therefore the required procedure was to let it idle for about 2 minutes (maybe more) every time before you turn it off to let the turbo cool down --- else the oil in the turbo bearing would coke and soon let the turbo destroy itself. There were after market auxiliary oil pumps available that would circulate the oil for a couple/few minutes after turning the ignition off to help prevent the problem. Turbo replacement is very expensive, requires dropping the whole front suspension including the cross member.

Overall a nice car, handling is the same (but less) as a 968. A very large improvement over the regular 924: suspension, brakes, luxury items, etc. It was the basis for the 944 which was nothing more than a 924 Turbo with the Porsche 2.5 liter N/A engine and puffed out fenders, and so it has a valid and admirable place in the 924/944/968 family. Unlikely to become much of a collector car, or increase in value, and so buying expensive parts, repairs, and keeping it up to good shape will always be challenged by the emotional problem of investing more than it is worth. Mine was a silver coupe just like my 968 and also had the "getrag" transmission: 1st gear was left and down (below reverse) and then 2-5 in the normal H pattern in the middle / right -- kinda racy. But not sure who would really want it when choosing between a 931 150hp with Turbo (and serious turbo lag) vs 240hp without in the 968, (likewise nobody really wants the original pre-1985 944).

But yes, go for it, explore, it might be fun, grow the auto family, they are also very good cars.

Yeah, definitely a lighter weight car -- the 968 feels little heavy to me at times, certainly compared to my 911, can't recall a comparison to the 931 since it has been so long. And the C/D should be less, the C/D for the 924S was less than the 944 with bulging fenders, and the 1988 924S had the same spec engine as the 944 and thus was a faster car. I know I've heard reports that some people like the 924 styling better as well, a bit more smooth, clean and elegant. That is one thing I like better about the 968 compared to 944 Turbo or S2 -- just looks cleaner and more holistic in the design.

I would have kept the 931 longer, just that the Turbo went out one more time -- and so I called the charity to haul it away. Still have the original sticker, the price (pre tax etc.) was $25,750. Just a few grand short of a new 911 in 1980. Guess which tool kit I carry in the 968? Yup, I kept the 931 tool kit before it was towed away, and my 968 didn't come with one!

Change the waste gate spring and get the euro ignition and you'll have 177hp.

My 924 n/a autocross car is gutted and weighs in at 2,000lbs. Some people get them down to 1800#.

I couldnt say for sure, as I dont have a turbo, but I would be willing to bet the performance of a sub 2k lbs car with 177hp would be quite comparable to the 968.

Check out the 924 forums at www.924board.org

I would get the car and have fun with it.
