968 has found new home
#1

Hello to all. I recently purchased a 1994 968 from Paul Miller Porsche New Jersey. Maybe some of you may have seen the car in autotrader. I hope I made a good decision. I'm still waiting for car to arrive to its new home in Chico, CA. Sounds like I should have the car this Friday. I 'm very excited. I have always been a big fan of the 968. I currently have a 1998 Boxster that has been a great daily driver for me. The car has 130,000 what types of maintenance should I do right now? Timing belt etc.?

Welcome!

If you haven't got records, get the timing belts checked, while in there replace the water pump.

Check all the rubber belts and hoses and replace.

Replace the heater valve.

Replace the clutch line from the master to the slave cylinder with a stainless one from RS Barn.

Get a spare DME relay.

If you have a Porsche Maint booklet with the car check over the service stuff, if not there may be one on this site.

Drive like you stole it!

Looks great, so I guess this falls into 'love at first sight' type of purchase...maybe has new seat leather, too...

All the above from SILVY...and after driving a few days, you will discover the other 'needs' of your new girlfriend

ENJOY!

Welcome to the forums!

Definately do the clutch hose, the stainless one available through RS Barn, unless

the hose was done recently.

Best of luck!

Congrats! It's the bigger brother of my new 968! Mine has a built date of 2/94 and has the newer seats. Your seats look different. Looks like yours is a '93 built (June-July '93 timeframe based on Carfax) as a '94 model. Looks like you're the 4th owner.

I was looking at this exact 968 and was thinking about it until a local Southern California 968 owner had a similar configuration but with lower miles (119k), lower cost, all service records and saved $$$ on the transportation. Also, I did notice in the ebay listing photos some paint blemishes (?) - if I remember, very slight but overall the car looks quite clean. Didn't know it had LSD, that's a nice bonus!

Midnight Blue / Tan is my favorite combo! After almost 2 weeks with mine, I'm still in the honeymoon stage.

The car does have two small blemishes on the hood. The transporation covered was not cheap but I hope I got a good deal on the car. If you look at the ebay listing for my winning bid I think even with the shipping it was a good deal. I won't know till tomorrow when I finally see the car and then maybe I won't know till I have had the car a few months.

Have the cam chain, guides, belts checked. If they are ready to go they can ruin your good deal.

I'm going to put the 17" 993 cup wheels on the car from wheel enhancement. Do you have a recommendation on size and brand?

I have to agree, the 17" 993 Cub Wheels look the best on the 968.

I'm planning on doing the same but will wait for now, they are pricey. Cost is $3700 for wheels only. They will accept the 16" C2 wheel as trade in for $400.

I have like 90% thread left on the 16" wheels, so I'll wait until I go through these tires and then upgrade. Already have a friend with a 928 that is willing to buy my 16" wheels.

I agree that those wheels are the best OEM look for a 968. You might look around a bit before going the Wheel Enhancement route. Check Ernie's Alloys and the classifieds in Panorama as well. I got lucky and found a set with only minor blemishes for >$500 last fall. Several people at the Hershey swap meet had sets for >$1,000.

If you do pay the full price for a set of refurbished wheels remember that the "993 Cup" wheels on a 968 had 7.5" rims in the front instead of the 7" that was standard on the 993. Smart, as the front of a 968 supports much more of the car's weight than in a Carrera. Mine are 7s from a 993 and I have been assured by a bunch of smart Porsche wheel and suspension guys that this is no problem. Bu if I had been paying full price...

Here are some 993 replica wheels for about $1230.

I've heard that the replicas are heavier wheels than the OEMs? Is that right?

Nice Find.

What I can tell you is that you are at the best forum to gather any and all information on your car. You can spend days on this forum reading up on your car. That alone will direct you on future courses of action. If you can't find the answer for a particular problem, just ask and you will get many helpfull responses from folks that eat and breath these cars daily. I'm not "selling" anything, but if you find, as I did, that the information and help here is invaluable in keeping your car road ready, then by all means send the Mods a few bucks and help keep the site moving forward for all of us to continue to enjoy each other cars and share our discoveries and pleasure with the 968.
