No offense, but I'd never been a big fan of the R8. However, sitting next to it does make the 968 look a bit quaint and dated

I don't think it looks dated. Look at both cars and see the similar curvatures. The new has a bigger rear end but it still has a sharp look to it. In my humble opinion of course!

I think the R8 suffers from the same problem as the new Scirroco by being an overly smooth shape. Not enough de-lineation. Aston DB7 and DB9 still rate among the very best I would say. Sorry make that Asssshton DB7 and 9, forgot I was Scottish there for a wee meeenite.

Boy, thats tough call. Is it a v10, or v8 R8? I wouldnt call it dated either. Im a big fan of the R8. Id like to own a v10 R8 eventually. The 968 with a turbo, and properly setup would run with, and even beat it. The R8 has a longer wheelbase, and is mid engine though. Defintiely better than a 997 IMO. Of course stock vs stock the R8 would run circles around the 968. Too very different cars in comparison really. Many people think the 968 is mostly audi but its not. It was assembled in Zuffenhausen(on the same line as the 964/993), and the only thing Audi had a part with is the 01e. Its somewhat of a Audi/Porsche hybrid transmission. The 924 was the only that was more Audi than Porsche really, with the exception of the 931 "snailshell". The 944's transmissions were pretty much all Audi IIRC, and they were assembled at Neckarsulm.

Nice cars man. Did you opt for the carbon fiber side panels?

Maybe "dated" is too strong of a word for the 968. Not that I dislike the R8, but I find it to be "edgy to a fault," so much so that sitting next to it, the 968 does look really old school. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing; I still think the 968 is one of the prettier cars ever made. But among more modern cars, I do prefer the Aston Martins, the BMW Z8 (although it has more of a retro flavor), and even the Corvette C6. Not denying that the R8 is a phenomenal car, though.

I LOVE the R8, especially the Spyder (my toy must be a drop top)....I would give body parts for that car.

If I was going old school, I'd go Z8...rolling sculpture....

I don't think the R8 photographs really well - in person (mine completely murdered out - even headlights) looks amazing. I have never owned a car that has has so much positive attention - probably because of Ironman and transformers. Unlike my friends with Lambos and ferrari's who get flipped off every time they drive - everyone seems to really love this car.

I have had 911 turbos as well - great cars but the look of it does not make me excited anymore.

This one is the V8 - I bought it from a friend 11 months old and with 3k miles and had put almost 30k into the car in mods (Kreissieg variable tune exhaust alone is 10k! installed) - OUCH! At the time the v10 just came out and it was 50k more! It's not that much faster, certainly not 50k.

I graduated HS in 91 and had a few 944's I remember the day I saw the 968 for the first time - is was red and black just like the one I bought. I knew one day I would have one. I have looked for years and finally found one in A+ condition.

Does it feel like I am driving a 20 year old car in the 968? yes - Do I love it anyway? yes.

The R8 is cramped - loud as sh@@ and super uber flashy. The 968 is comfy and nobody notices me - which I like.

Pic of car - Carbon Blades a must!

Love the looks of the BMW Z8 as well, but for inexplicable reasons I have this feeling it must handle like crap, and that you won't be able to turn a corner faster than 20mph with it.. I'm sure I'm wrong, but that's what comes to mind when I see one ( once I get past admiring of its lines..) Whereas an R8 looks as if you'd be driving the Space Mountain rollercoaster at Disney, and can throw it into a hairpin turn at 100mph without the slightest concern ..

no offense, but i'm not a fan of that car at all, and i absolutely hate the weird non body color side panels, almost as much as i hate the clear engine cover on the 360 - but, if i had to have that chassis, i'd rather have the one it's based on, if only for the bragging rights

Hate - Is a strong word - I only hate Pontiac Aztek! If you have ever owned an Italian car you would know why I went with The R8 Vs Gallardo...

Not only that - the R8 has very low Dbag effect whereas the Lambo is a Lambo - You cant pull up to a relatives house or a business meeting in a Lambo withoout looking like a total tool.

I do love them and almost bought a Superleggera over the R8.

i agree about the dbag thing - i'm not a fan of lambos either (except the miura) - at least the name would be there though - audi is not a great name to me - always seems to be something based on something else, and not something new and original - as such, it lacks something

but there is not a single thing i like about the R8, and in fact find many things i really do not like at all (like the nose, the side panels, the fact that it looks like a japanese car, yada yada)

sorry - just not my cup of tea

agreeing with Flash on this specific item.. not sure what Audi was thinking, the car's design is unique enough so there was no need for that

added "accent" to make it stand out. However, I've seen quite a few now without the contrasting color panels, and those R8s, to my eyes, are

pure sports car art on wheels !

I think my comment on the edginess of the R8 kind of captures the essence of the relatively controversial response to its styling, both here and in the automotive press. I credit Audi for its boldness, and I agree they look better in person than in pictures, but I'm afraid I'm with Flash on this one, again with absolutely no offense intended. I'm sure it's a phenomenal car, but its looks just don't do anything for me. But then again, I hold the minority opinion that the Acura NSX is a homely (and borderline goofy-looking) car...

The NSX ugly? Come on - it was 20 years in looks ahead of its time! Still looks cool - slow as hell though... I had to teach some guy a hard lesson in my SUV with packed full of stuff from Ikea with it...No Joke - I own everyone in the ML63 LOL

Pretty cars, all. Not for me though.

If I drove either one of them I'd feel like I needed to turn my baseball cap about "30-degrees a'starboard".

By the way, that's a lovely plaid belt she's wearing.
