I'd love to have a cab to go with the coupe, but I have got to clean out the "used car lot" first. If only Porsche had produced a 968 Spyder or Speedster. Hmmm.

Perhaps Flash can start a line of crystals covering a gamut of cars. Do we need a vote on this?

I want a cab version too.

One other point....I'd be happy to pay an additional $50 if it had the 968 forums logo and the forum got the $50. Just a thought.

As Flash would tell you, you don't have to buy anything to give the forum money!

Lol, would anyone think otherwise ?! Unless of course the top would be a piece of cloth inserted in the cube , ;-) ;-)

lol - true enough

the way these are made is they start with a solid block of crystal, and then laser etch it on the INSIDE. they use a 3D program with a rendering made from pictures to control the X-Y-Z coordinates for the laser. pretty cool stuff.

Way cool. And I thought you might have bought one of those new 3 D Printers for this job, lol

Count me in for the cab. And I would be interested in a custom display base to (if you are going to provide those)

i doubt that i am going to mass produce the display base. i may make one for myself, but that's likely to be it.

i am tracking these posts, and putting them on a spreadsheet. i'll make an announcement here when i am ready to pull the trigger, and i'll send emails to the addresses used when you signed up for this club. there will only be a few days though for you to go to the D1R site and order them. i don't want to hang everybody up waiting around.

So I'm in for a coupe...so do I have to respond to this thread to get on the list or can I wait and just order from D1R site?

I know mute point for me but others may want to know...

if you respond here, i'll send an email to poke you. if you are willing to watch and wait, and just order it on the site when it comes up, you can do that too.

i am realizing now that i wish i had people sending an email to the sales address. it's a lot harder to track here than it is that way. i didn't think the response would be so big.

oh well.

p.s. - once i do make the announcement, which will be in a separate thread, i will close this thread, so that i don't have multiple points to watch.

Just like the semi-precious mineral globes a few years ago, and Galilean thermometers, these things are all over the place in China. Lots of little street shops and hotel kiosks set up to make them on the spot from photos you provide, or 3D renderings after a short wait. Neat software (I've got some for my CNC machine). The display bases are a few bucks, but the novelty of them wears off pretty quickly, and the batteries usually die from sitting, as opposed to running. I've got a bunch of crystals with company logos, models of the Pearl Tower in Shanghai, but I probably couldn't find them since the move. They do look cool, as long as you don't touch them (they're fingerprint magnets)!

The 968 idea is definitely the coolest one so far, and the only one I'd pay for.

yeah - most of those are only 180 degrees though, because they are working with just one photo. it's a bit tougher to get the full 360 (or actually the full sphere). it doubled the cost (duh).

make sure you double the price for anyone who orders from Marin County, Berkeley, or Santa Barbara - it's not just art, Crystals have healing powers there, so you need to charge them extra for that <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

lol - yeah - but i have to really mark it up in modesto. the "crystal" competition there is fierce.
