Balance shaft belt idler pulley adjustment
#41

I should be really carefull with shops that get paid to do some experimental stuff with your car. Either they know how to do it right or they don't!

At this point, I'd probably fix it myself. They obviously don't know what they are doing.

If you take it back to the garage, print out the pages from the manual that show how to do it right. This is not that difficult.

I am also about to dive into this procedure for the first time on my car. (although I did a pre 85.5 water pump years ago with the 90* twist method)

My question: should the fat part of the eccentric be above the idler and pointed to the left in the pix? Looks like it would have to be about the 11:00 position to meet both parameters.

I have been thinking about doing it myself but then probably loose any warranty claim in case something goes wrong afterwards and I already paid a lot of money to have this belt service done. What do you think of the belt itself, is it normal for these 'wires' to be visible? It's a contitech belt. And what problems could a belt casue that is too tight?

The belt looks ok, but setting it too tight makes it whine like crazy and stretch it out again. Mine whines just a tiny bit when cold, after a few minutes it goes away. On a hot day it doesn't whine at all.

Thanks for your feedback. So you are saying it is nornaal for a balance belt to have a tooth were it shows exposed wires as if it has been stitched together? I was wondering if it was damage caused by the belt skipping or may be a manufacturing defect.

To me, that belt looks like it's starting to fray, and I wouldn't take any chances with it. I'd replace it - they're not very expensive.

Replace the belt and ask for a Gates belt. There are not that expensive. A broken belt can ruin your day.
