2019 West Coast Gathering?
#21

Like I said, Lake Tahoe and surrounding areas would be a great location for the WCG again.

But, maybe we could consider farther South on Hwy 1? Maybe Big Sur, Pfieffer Beach (and if everyone is in to hiking, Pfieffer Falls), and of course Bixby Canyon Bridge - - what an iconic photo it could be of a string of Porsches cruising across the bridge?? Farther South might be better for the S. CA and AZ participants too??

If there's interest, I could cruise over there and check out some possibilities...just say so.

As much as I love the Coast Road and the Big Sur area, other than Highway 1 there just aren't that many other roads for our drives.   While driving to Big Sur vs. Tahoe is similar for me, many of those who have attended in the past three years we've been doing this have driven out from Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona.  Big Sur vs. Tahoe is a big difference for many of them.

If we were to consider the Coast, I think further south than Big Sur, maybe near San Luis Obispo or Pismo Beach might  make more sense.  Sycamore Hot Springs Resort in San Luis Obispo, (really just an old hotel with hot spring tubs in each room and a group of hot tubs along a path up a hill) is very nice if we could get a group discount.  We could do one day on the Coast Road, and one day inland.

Of course we could do one day north (Honey Lake/Lake Davis area) and one day south (89 to 88) in the Tahoe Area.

Other geographical suggestions?

I like the idea of spending one day at each stop and making the fun run the trip between stops.

Any consideration during the road selection for this outing as to whether they better suit a cab or coupe? Sounds like someone hear needs a long deep hit (trip)

Would you like me to check with the "968 Park Hotel"?? To see if we can get a group rate ??

...that was the WCG location a few yrs ago (personally, we didn't stay there because it was not far from Sparks, so we don't know the experience others had with staying there) and is located in Lake Tahoe. Anyone have an opinion about the hotel??

(And I'd say no on the Hellcats because Dodge doesn't offer a factory convertible)

Alas, the 968 Park Hotel is no more. (Could there have been a more appropriate hotel for us?). It is now the Hotel Becket. Still a good hotel in a good location. By the way, I ran the idea of driving to a new hotel each day by Senior Management, (my wife, Tina), and she looked at me like I was nuts and asked if I really wanted to load up and unload each day, let alone leave all our stuff in the car while we stop to eat or do other stuff. She has a point.

Also, we should discuss dates. Perhaps pick a weekend in June or July?

I thought a closed vehicle might make for a nice change...I've driven a 968 Cabriolet (Flash's extra), Yellow Corvette convertible (a pair, with Rico), Mercedes  350E Convertible, and Silver Mustang GT convertible (a Silver cab).

Wait is this only for cabs? Jay maybe you should do one of your famous east coast events and allow coupes in!

Prius ?! If any hybrid, or a fully electric vehicle (Tesla , etc ) comes even within 100 miles of our REAL cars , count me out . ;- ) . I don't care how fast they are, driving a techno-geek mobile which sounds like a sewing machine mated with a golf cart is a shame, and an insult to the automotive world ! IMHO.

Note : the sole exception is a 918 Spyder, so any of you guys are more than welcomed to rent one of those and join our West Coast gathering ( oh, and bring along some microfiber cloths to wipe our drool off of it :-) :-) )

May I suggest either June 29-30, or July 6-7, 2019, for the West Coast Gathering? Good?  Bad?  Other suggestions?

Bill, I was thinking the same dates...6/28 to 6/30. Thanks for the update about the hotel, didn't know - had searched for the hotel and it still showed on searches, but didn't notice that no rental dates work. Terrible reviews now and shows an address across the street.

The weekend before July 4th might be better than afterwards? I'm sure we can find another local hotel, especially if we book well in-advance...and there's always Reno.

How about 9/14/19, the 50th anniversary of the 914? We have to have a get together then...

Yes, I pulled my car in late so it wouldn't have iced Windows in the morning and closed the garage door & it stuck halfway down...coldn't leave it that way, so spent a couple hrs temporarily "fixing" it.

And, I've been spending a lot of time in another forum because I've been working on the 914. Rebuilt a 2.1 liter motor, and am putting an LSD, 930 CVs and axles,New fuel system, etc., Etc. Sorry, for the mistaken post...

Staying closer to the coast might benefit us. The dates are close what we had last year, though a fun trip, it was hot.... Just my five cents worth!!

Heat is my enemy, and I will no longer join any driving event gathering if the temps are expected to be above 70 F at any point in time.

Hell, that's too hot for me even if it was a swimming event gathering .
