18 mm wide balance belt.
#1

I removed my original broken balance belt that is 18mm wide and clearly fits all the sprockets and rollers. I have contacted several sources including Porsche, Paragon, etc and have only been able to find a 15mm replacement belt. I have seen references on this site to the 18 mm belt but no sources for one. Do they exist or is the 15mm belt the recommended replacement?

Changing these belts is simple, finding the correct one, oh well.

My car had the 18mm belt, and I ordered the correct belt, and it showed up as a 15mm. I sourced the 18mm from another company. 18mm is still available, and the correct part. I understand the 15mm works, but why shortcut this critical part?

I only have one data point, so please don't take this as definitive, but I had the 15 mm belt in my car, and at about 18,000 miles, it sheared off about 20 teeth. I suspect that the fact that it's so much narrower than the sprockets allows it to "walk" as it spins, generating excess heat and shortening its life. I ordered a new one from Paragon, not realizing at the time that my old belt was the wrong one, and they sent me an 18 mm belt, which fits perfectly on the sprockets. I wouldn't take any chances, and I'd do whatever I could to get my hands on the correct belt. I think the name of the guy at Paragon who sold me my belt was Jason. Good luck.

That's great news for all of us, as I can't imagine the 15 mm belt being the smartest way to go, if my experience is in any way typical. And I can really vouch for Jason - he was very helpful, and very nice to deal with. Plus, of course, Paragon is a sponsor...

yes - those guys have always been very easy to deal with

i also had a problem with what i found out to be a 15mm belt installed by a shop in santee that claimed to be "experts" - it jumped a tooth very early on - since the 18mm belt was installed, i have had no issues

I was finally able to locate an 18mm balance belt at one of the last places I like to shop -- Advance Auto Parts. It's made by Dayco and comes with a one year warranty. Price was approx. $35. They got it in two days.
