XM Radio
#1

Has anyone installed a XM in their Cab? I'd be interested in the placement of the control and antenna.

I would be interested too. The local classical station maybe to sold to Dan Snyder, owner of the awful WAshington Deadskins. Ugh.

I have seen the antenna mounted on the trunk lid, looks perfectly fine there. It was right in the center and close to the back edge so not much of the wire showed.

Here's my antennae placement which works very well. I have the Alpine unit that allows addition of the satelite radio module (either XM or Sirius based on the module puchased). Control module is in the glovebox as that was the easiest location to get power and ground and make it more convenient to run the AiNet cable from the head unit.

I am an XM dealer, so we have XM here in the office but I had to have Siruis for my Howard Stern fix in the car. I also have a portable Siruis that I take in whatever truck I may have at the time. The antennae for that just gets placed on the dash inside the car and doesn't work as well as even the smallest obstruction such as the inspection sticker, windshield wipers, etc. seem to have an adverse effect on the portable unit. It will drop out much more than the hardwired unit in the 968 does...it rarely drops out if ever. Hope that helps.

I also have an XM antenna in that location behind the third taillight -- very discreet and works quite well.

I added XM to my car and placed my antennae in front of the 3rd brake light. I make a small cut in the gasket between the light and the decklid so the antennae wire would fit snug and smooth. I ran the wire through the decklid following the brake light wires. It was a pain to do but now I have no wires showing at all.

As for a control unit, I am using the XM Commander. My Blau supports auxilliary inputs. I removed the tray below the stereo and mounted the receiver there. The small "controller" is mounted in MDF that fits flush with the stereo in the opening below. There was enough room left for me to mount a standard VDO clock to the right of the controller as well so it looks great and nearly stock. I can get a picture when I get home if you want to see it.

I have done a complete make over with my stereo system. I was loving it when I moved my XM to my 968. I am using an Alpine head, Infinity speakers all around except for the 8" JL sub. I built a box that replaced the storage box. Half of the box is sub and the other is storage. It thumps well.

i don't see why it could not be placed inside the car - unlike a hardtop, the cab has no real rf obstruction in the roof structure

I placed a rear spoiler on my cab, which had a break light in it. So it took off the third break leght and placed it over the middle hole. Sealed it from the inside with clear caulk. It looks pretty good and I have no problems with leaking. Just an idea. I have heard some people putting the antenna inside, but it just seems that outside would work best. (Direct line of sight) as the instructions ask.

Just a thought.

Daryl,

I live in springfield, and have a white cab. Wow not that far off.

yeah - they say that to account for most cars - it's the "works for all" solution - since it is satellite though, and on the presumption that they are not using ground based repeaters, line of sight seems obvious - up - as such, and knowing what blocks or obscures rf signals, the top should not present the problems that a roof would
