We, in Oregon are blessed with abundant Rose and inexpensive Salmon. So my go quick meal is grilled Salmon, green salad, either pasta or good sourdough bread and Rose to drink. Pinot Noir Rose (Pinot Rosa) is a by product of Pinot Noir production where the winemakers saignees off some of the juice prior to starting fermentation. The saigneed juice is fermented as a Rose. The other method is harvest Pinot Noir grapes early in the ripening process, when the Brix is around 22 degrees.

 

I really like Rhone roses with grilled lamb and chicken. Also good with grilled steak.

Rose’ has been much maligned by wine “snobs“  forever.  And they can all go kiss our a**es as far as I’m concerned ; on some days, with or without certain dishes,  there’s no red or white wine that’ll suit the occasion quite as well ..  I’m not talking about cheap rose’ , but there are some superb ones to be had which cane be enjoyed as much as any great reds or whites. IMHO

I'm disappointed to admit I was a "rosé doesn't do anything for me", but since coming to France I've realized I was just drinking poor quality rosé.

They're "reserved" ...... mainly about where to find absinthe.

When we first visited, absinthe was still illegal, I remember going for a walk in the woods to where a bottle was secreted away near a stream, an honesty box was close bye for donations. Absinthe museums abound with equipment and methods of transporting the liquor without detection; I guess like prohibition in the 1930s.

Now absinthe is legal it is frequently consumed, ok not usually with breakfast, but certainly a glass before lunch an dinner.

So maybe you're right, they're tipsy!

Again, it’s all about individual taste, but there’s almost nothing I detest more in a drink than anise / licorice flavor .   I’d have to have a gun held to my head to even take a sip of that stuff.   Absinthe may give some people a unique “high” arguably not attainable by drinking anything else, and only matched by actual drugs, but there are numerous anise flavored liquors from a lot of countries , so I must be in the minority with my finicky taste buds I suppose..

Correct, that's why it's legal again. "In the old days" my MiL was sent to the garage to buy milk ... ie already diluted absinthe.

Learn something new every day ...never heard of wormwood before this.  So I suppose that herb must be similar in taste to anise and that’s why absinthe used to taste like that ( in addition to the legality of it ) ?  Oddly enough as much as I hate the taste of anise in drinks, I like fennel in salads , or anise flavor in biscotti.

Absinthe was the party drink of choice in the early 1900s, the likes of Toulouse-Lautrec had a small bottle inside that famous walking cane. The "accepted" use of hallucinogens by artists throws up the double standards on performance enhancing drugs .... Okay for artists/musicians v not okay for athletes??

Hi guys, especially Chris, I thought you might like a glimpse of the grape ripening hereabouts .....


   


Yesterday we "hosted" the apero for a friend's wedding in our courtyard. As part of the decoration my friend nipped off to the nearest vineyard and came back with this bunch and stalk. The local vigneron say the season is about three weeks advanced this year. We had a lot of water early on, which nicely filled the aquifer, then pretty dry since (not the 50C some of you guys have been experiencing, but high 30s).


I think this is Grenache, but it may be Carignan and I'm happy to be corrected. The flesh is now sweet but the skin has a bitter aftertaste. Apparently this will be a good year for wine provided we can avoid the fires.
