Will these wheels fit?
#1

Hello all-

I know many people run 18's on their cars and I am curious if these specific ones would fit:

Front: 8.5 x 18 ET61

Rear: 10 x 18 ET61

If so, would spacers be required, etc.?

Thanks in advance!

Hey biotechee,

The 18's that I am running do not need spacers. They are 7.5 x 18 et50 front, and 10 x 18 et65 rear.

The fronts may be too wide as mine seem to fit at ride height but needed bottom black cover trimming to clear full turning range when the wheels were off of the ground on a jack stand.

I do not know is the offset will be a problem, but I would try them on for size if possible.

There have been several posts about 18's and these seem to be what most, if not all are running. Mine are 933 wheels.

Thanks Brian.

Unfortunately, I can't try them on to see if they fit. These were a set for sale on Ebay. I had contemplated bidding on them, but I really shouldn't be spending that cash for a set of wheels. My cab already has excellent wheels and the set I was looking at didn't have tires! Guess I have a blossoming wheel fetish!

I appreciate the feedback.

Yeah, I know! The set I was looking at were near mint 18" Ruf Speedlines. VERY pretty! Too expensive for me at $2450 w/o tires though....

So I have my daily driver wheels up on a rack in my garage (steel wheels and snows on it now). And in my basement, I have a set of 16" BMW BBS Y-spokes that I was originally going to put on my previous daily driver (BMW E36 318i). I sold the E36 and still have the wheels.

IF I were to get another set of wheels, my wife wouldn't kill me, but would probably strongly suggest counseling!!!!

For some reason, I have been able to exercise restraint when it comes to wheels.

I've also considered a set 993 Targa wheels, and then having the centers painted black. And I still love the Sport Classics and Sport Classic II's...

I could easily see myself being a wheel whore! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

(I also have a seat fetish too- haven't acted on that either- my bank account thanks me!)

I have had my E34 wagon since Halloween, and have bought and sold 4 sets of wheels (all at a pretty good profit).

I have not even registered the car yet.

Finally settled on 18" style 32's.

The rear rims are perfect, they have the same size and offset as the ones for the 968 turbo S. The front rims will fit at the outside, but maybe the clearance at the inside is a problem. They should fit with a 7 mm spacer.

I have 18's. fit perfectly with no spacers. Offset is nearly perfect and rims are centered where they should be. search for my topics 'wheel pics and specs' in the 'wheels ' section.

My wheels, which I consider to be just about right in terms of fit and look, are 997 Carrera III 18", fronts are 8" wide 57 offset, rears are 10" wide 58 offset. Relative to mine, the fronts you were considering were wider with more offset, both of which would bring the inside of the wheel closer to the centerline of the car - whether or not too close is something I don't know. The rears should have been fine, sitting slightly further (3mm) inside the fender than mine do.

Thanks all! I passed on the wheels anyway- I have no business dropping that cash right. But, should they come up again in the future, I may jump on them.

Jim- as always, good to see you yesterday!

take care when selecting wheels - when they get heavy, the suspension and braking suffers - you can feel the loss in acceleration too, but that is a lot less of an issue than the need for more spring and shock, and even more importantly the need for more brakes

not sure which ruf wheels you are talking about, but the ones i've seen that fit were VERY heavy at nearly 30# each - same goes with the sport classic (not sure f it's 1 or 2 - if i had pics i could tell you)

the other big issue, besides the weight of the wheel itself, is the weight of the tire - my wheels are very light, and lighter than stock, but the tires are heavier

i'm still trying to find a 17" wheel i like enough to go back down in weight

Please NO!!! Don't start me thinking about going to 17" wheels in order to make up for the weight gain I'm going to see when I have my M030 calipers (and rotors!) installed. I LOVE my current 18" wheels.

16" are probable best all around for track days and DD comfort.

17" are a good compromise.

I'm looking for a set of 17 x 8.5 lightweight wheels - that's the max size per racing rules - any suggestions?

I can run a 16 also but I'd rather the 17.

Cheers

The Rufs in question were your standard 5-spoke star pattern wheels (made by Speedline for Ruf for Porsche). I am sure they were pigs- most Ruf/Speedline 18" wheels for Porsche applications are/were not light. But, I would not be too worried about the overall effects. I would anticipate the issues but I believe these come less in to play during normal street driving. I honestly do not drive anywhere near the limits of any 968 - honest - 5/10s at best. So I think I would be okay overall.

The good part was they were expensive and was more of a "curious" thing for me. The 17's I have on the cab now are OEM and in damn near new condition - and they happen to be my favorite. There really is no reason for me to get another pair. I think Smokie/PorscheDude/Pat is secretly hexing me and making me want to buy more wheels!!!

EDIT: Here's the pic of the wheels I liked:
