How did you and your 968 meet?
#21

I had 4 different variations of the 944 over last 20 yrs or so(83,84,86 Turbo,87S) and for my 50th B-day my wife thought I deserved something newer.I test drove a couple of Boxsters(loved the way they drove, top down) but(we are both avid golfers) no space for 2 sets of clubs.Checked out a Cayman(much to my surprise, same problem) and then found 968 cab(surely clubs would fit in the trunk-no way).So I had all but given up(on a Porsche)(was actually looking at different-BMW/Mercedes solution-I must have lost my mind!).Checking on Rennlist classifieds one morning and up popped black 92 968 coupe in great shape, low miles, all recent service and within driving distance. My son happened to be in that vacinity that weekend so I called the owner, convinced him that my son was on the up and up and could come by for look/see and test drive. He(son) went drove(called and said this is the one).So I sent him a downpayment and came and picked it up the next weekend. That was a little over 4 yrs ago it's been my pride and joy ever since.Still gets the"is that a Ferrari?".I give them the "no,it's just a Porsche""really,I've never seen one like that".(and I could fit four sets of golf clubs, luggage and still cruise with most of todays technology).

Autotrader. Bought her sight-unseen. Did have her inspected by a Porsche dealer before hand though. I'm in Florida and it was in Michigan. I couldn't get off work to go pick it up so my Mom (who happened to be in Michigan for the Nascar race) got to do the honors of bringing her home.

Back in 2000 I considered a 968 but I couldn't find any to test drive. I also underestimated the power to weight ratio and handling prowess.

I ended up buying a 99 Mustang Cobra - great car after some modifications.

In 2003, I moved to Atlanta where the emissions rules are pretty strict. A lot of the modifications needed to be "adjusted" - I was running a catless exhaust. My wife hated the exhaust note and swore the neighbors weren't happy either.

I ended up selling the mustang to my dad.

Low and behold we moved south of Atlanta, where you can get by with a few more "mods". I also moved to a subdivision where the neighbors weren't so close. I worked out a deal to buy the mustang back.

But my better half decided otherwise - you can all thank her.

She wanted something she would enjoy riding in and that didn't shake the pictures off the wall.

So I convinced her that a 951 was the solution. I looked a so many poor examples it was frustrating.

Then I stumbled across a wonderful 968; it was well maintained by a former member of this board.

I made the purchase and everyone was happy.

I met mine on eharmony.

OK seriously though, I found the car keys in a cracker jack box, and the car itself was pulled out of a swamp by Yoda.

Alright, the real story. Uma Thurman kicked many an ass in that japanese dance club in Kill Bill but at the time she was broke and that yellow suit was expensive. My uncle's neighbor owns a motorcycle gear shop and financed the suit to her. She took too long paying and later the "interest" they negotiated was that she would boost a nice car for him. She went and stole a speed yellow (go figure) 993tt. The bike shop guy took the 993tt with a nice big grin! And it got stolen within a week. Feeling withdrawal, he went and bought a 968, affordable and resembled a 993. He got tired of it, so he sold it to my uncle (his neighbor). Uma heard about all this crap and got pissed that the bike shop guy couldn't even hold onto a car for a week. She went and stole that 968 from my uncle and drove it into the bike shop guy's living room. Both my uncle and his neighbor collected insurance money, and Uma went on to find Bill's brother Bud. I helped my uncle part out the 968, and in so doing earned a lot of that insurance money he just collected. I used the money to help me buy my own 968. I found this one on craigslist, but I chose this one because the CA license plate read 1UMA968 I am dead serious.

OK fine all BS aside, I just found it on craigslist and liked it. Boring story.

I saw her first on onlinetrader/classiccars. She belonged to an older geltleman who lived in AZ in the winter and summered in CA. We spoke about the car about a year ago and I made him an offer. Below his asking price of course. Well he didn't really answer me on the offer. We became friendly and spoke often about many things. Golf, sailing, we both collect old Lionel trains and had a few laughs from time to time for several months. He would call me or I would call him. He took the car to a local Porsche dealer for a complete look over for me. I even got to know his whole family. He called me in Feb. of this year. Just to talk I guess. Which we did for a time and only spoke briefly about my insane offer on the car. Again no yes or no. In March I received a call from Barbara his wife. She told me Banks had passed away after a long term illness. I never detected he was in anyway ill nor did he ever tell me so. I did know he was 76 years old but hell my mother is 102. I really felt I lost a friend ......what a great guy. She told me he wanted me to have first denial on the car. I said did he tell her what my offer was? She said yes and that was fine with her. I asked her to talk to the family and take their time given the situation. Her son Tim called me a week later and said the car was mine to have. So I called Horseless Carrige and one week later she showed up. I had really never seen a good picture of her. See my album. Never met him but I'll miss our talks. What a great guy. I knew very little about his way of life except his kids and what fun he was having. Banks wife Barbara sent me his Obituary and a couple of books he writen. He owned Executive Suites Hotels................No surprise there huh?????????

Friend of mine was a Product Manager at Michelin and took me to a couple of DE events at Mid Ohio where I got to drive his GT3 full race car. I got hooked. Went out and bought a 951 in Ohio and really loved the car. It had some electrical issues and finally sold it but in the process found out about the evolved 968. Since we moved to Tampa, I was really wanting an XJ8 and was shopping Auto Trader when I looked under the Porsche search and this car came up at a Tampa dealer who specializes in German cars. Went up to see it. It came with all the service records and the previous owner had dumped over $10K in it in the previous 3 years he owned it. Bought it for $16K and drove it home never looking back. Love the car.

He has another 968 Cab up there now for $18K with about 55K . Nice car

I was working in Germany and told my Frau that I would buy a Porsche - she said absolutely not - I would have to wait until we return to the States. Moved to Rochester, NY and bought a 1990 944S2 (Guards Red, of course) which I subsequently wrecked on a snowy NY road. I spent most of the next 3 weeks standing in the garage looking for my Porsche. Wife finally said "that's enough, go get yourself a new Porsche" so I did. Bought my 968 new off the showroom floor, without a test ride. I liked the 944S2 but the 968 really was the Porsche for me since it had styling features from all the Porsche models. I continue to take grief about my "garage queen" which now has 12,700 miles on it. Had planned a 4000 mile trip this fall (to break her cherry) but family responsibilities will not let that happen. IMHO, the 968 will continue to grow in popularity and will, someday, be a Classic!

Man, there are some really good stories here...

I had a friend just show up at my house driving a 968. He had been to the dealer and they turned him loose with it for the day. He tossed me the keys and I proceeded to scare the crap out of him driving back country roads that I knew, but he did not. I loved driving that car. I had the 944S which has great top end, but not much to speak of down low or mid-range. The 68 had wonderful torque where I was missing it.

Well I started looking on flea-bay and found a car in Kentucky that looked good. I emailed the guy and he told me the car was not with him, but at his parents house in...my town. I went and looked at the car and loved it. I won the bidding war on e-bay, but still didn't make reserve. I called the guy and we met at his parents house again and agreed on a price. The car came home with me. Still love it. I have had a 911 and a 914 and still have the 944S, however the 968 is a favorite. I do wish I had not gotten rid of the 911 as it was a 1966 with the wood dash and steering wheel. Those cars are going up in value big time.

Great stories!

Four years ago my 89 944S2 had gotten to the point of needing an engine overhaul. The car was just not new enough or in good enough shape in my mind to justify the cost. So I sold it to a guy in the midwest who wanted to build a track car. I told my wife that I was going to stay out of Porsche ownership for a bit and take my time to find just the right replacement...

Needless to say, two weeks later we were in a rental car headed from NC to NJ to buy the Amazon Green 60k 968 coupe I had found in the PCA online 'Mart. Damian Deblis (Damian in NJ) had taken an afternoon to go and check the car over for me and it had a recent $5k bill from Powertech in Rockaway, NJ. After I talked with Damian and with Powertech I figured a PPI was unnecessary and headed north with the check. The owner was concerned I was not going to show and called me that Saturday to check if I was coming. A guy in FL had called and said he would fly up the next day. I pulled into the owner's driveway as we spoke!

Drive back was a hoot - I was having so much fun and was so into the new car that I blew through the EasyPass lane on the turnpike headed to Newark to return the rental (they ain't got them in the south...). The car still had the owner's plates and he was kind enough to pay the fines and even shipped me the OEM bra once he found it in his garage! Nice guy - though he told me he was replacing the 968 with a Honda S2000.

Almost four and a half years later the car just turned 100k and is going strong.

Thanks for letting me share a story that still makes me smile - and I can look out my office window at the 968, patiently waiting to bring another smile to my face when I drive home this afternoon.
