Oh Lord Won't You Buy Me A 356
#1

Janis Joplin's 356 just sold for $1.76M! Gotta grab a paint brush and some LSD and get started on my 968.

That's funny :-) .

Btw, I would not pay a dime for that POS . Then again I would not pay a dime for a normally painted 356. Unless of course I can sell that eyesore the next day for a profit to someone with more money than brains .

pre-auction estimate of $400-600k....so not exactly in tune with the market.

But how can they be sure it's hers? All those old 356's look the same to me.

I think they painted it in a wind tunnel.

If you read up on the car, that's not the original artwork. Her siblings repainted it gray after the original artwork started to peel and flake. This is a remake of the original artwork, based on photos of the car when the artwork was new.

In the art world the art would be considered "fake", not "restored" since the original artwork was gone.

Yep, it was done originally with simple paint and had to be redone.  it was repainted to try to recreate the original per photos, and done in real auto paint this time. Is is a restoration or a fake? I don't know the legal definition, since it wasn't represented as the original paint.  I guess re-creation is the more appropriate word. But, I believe the buyer knew all that and wasn't buying a piece of art anyway but rather a car the belonged, in a somewhat significant way, to a celebrity.  Much the way McQueen cars sell for so much.  Imagine what a carcass of a 550 Spyder that belonged to James Dean would sell for if it turns out to have been found. I love Janis's music but this is Insane money!

Rare, something not found in large number. So I suppose we just have to wait until we are discovered!
