Advice on Lightweight Wheels
#1

Looking for some advice or ideas on lightweight wheels to use for track events. Must be 17", and would prefer lighter weight AND relatively inexpensive. Since I would be using them mostly for DE or other track events, don't want to give an arm and a leg - I would rather save resources for various sets of tires. Aesthetics is not important . Any ideas?

Tom,

Check out CCW, he's out of Florida.

I've had them for a couple of years now...only good things to report.

the cup wheels that came on the later cars are amazingly light, and probably your best value - any aftermarket wheel that is lighter will likely cost you a lot more

the lightest ones (5 spoke styles) tend to be the fikse, though they are known to crack - kinesis K 57 is a bit heavier but cracks less - HRE 547R is a little bit heavier than those, but cracks far less - i don't know anything about the CCW - all of these though are a grand a pop or so

i chose the HRE because it is a street car, and i wanted the strength - if it was strictly a road race car, i might have gone with the fikse, but would have stayed at 17 instead of 18, and gone with lower profile tires - an autocross car though would still have gotten the HRE, and definitely stayed 17 with lower profile tires in the front, but probably would have stayed with the 40s in the rear

hope that helps

Tom, have you considered using the 17 inch Cup 1 wheels you have for track and buying some others for street use? There are some good buys on 17 inch and 18 inch wheels from Boxsters that will work fine on our car for street use. Keep an eye on Rennlist, ebay and The Mart on PCA.org site for good deals. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

i just learned (and was sternly corrected on rennlist) that we have all been incorrectly referring to these wheels - there is no "Cup 1" and "Cup 2" - there is only "Cup"

the early 17" is the C2 Turbo (C2T) and the late one is the Cup - take a look at the wheel enhancement site

the late wheel is considerably lighter than the early wheel (18# and 19.5# vs 22# and 23.5#), but a bit tougher to find, and a bit more expensive when you do

CCW are nice light, custom offsets, etc and reasonably priced but not inexpensive. Popular with a lot of track guys.

Bob - WRT the installation of 18 inch wheels on the car, is there anything special which has to be done I.e. alignment or spacers?

Thanks,

Stephen

Not usually Stephen. It all depends on the type of wheel and the offset and /or backspacing of the wheel. I bought a set of used 18 inch wheels that came off a Boxster and the only thing I had to do was file and grind out the front wheel center where it would not go over the wheel bearing cap. I could remove the bearing cap, install the wheel and reinstall the bearing cap and it fit fine. That was a bother, so I just filed and ground enough off the inner mounting circle of the wheel so they would fit over the bearing cap. Spacing was fine and they drive and look great. These are wheels made by OZ Racing. The factory wheels do not require any grinding to fit. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

I have 18" wheels - the only thing that's needed is care with respect to the offset of the wheels that you use. My rears, in particular, have a low offset - 47 - that, IMHO, look great but gave me some challenges to eliminate fender interference. All is now well, and I'm very pleased with them. Given free choice, though, I'd choose a rear with a bit more offset - at least 52.

Bob your fix seems Very reasonable. I may have to do that myself as this is where I may get the 18 inchers. Reason I ask is that I have the oportunity to pick up a full set of Porsche 18 or 19 inch wheels from a gent. They will have the rubber on them but he thinks I need spacers etc. Anchormans comments also bring the fender clearance (ashamed I didn't think of that) <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sleep.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> as cause for concern. As I am not near as experianced with suspension as I would like, I look to gents like yourselves for guidance.

Thanks again.

If you post the specifications for the wheels you're considering, we will be happy to opine. For each size, the width and offset are critical dimensions. As for 19" - I'm not aware that anyone has put 19" wheels on a 968.
