This is very critical. The bottle should be specifically labeled - "Power Steering Fluid". <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



Jesting aside, any PS fluid will be appropriate. I haven't seen any variations on fluid, except synthetic and conventional, and they are interchangable. Do you have other selections?

Actually, I believe that the 968 takes Dexron III automatic transmission fluid for the power steering fluid. I don't have my manual here but I did some research on this a few months back and that's what turned up. It's kinda weird, I know, but that's what I believe it is.



If it makes you feel any better, new Corvettes take Dexron III automatic transmission fluid in their manual gearboxes! There's a sticker right next to the filler port just to remind anyone doing a fluid change.

dexron 3? i thought it was dexron 2



separate question - what's the difference between the yellow and the red fluids out there? i know the red is the dexron stuff, but i've never had a car that needed the yellow - i have seen it though at the stores

Actually power steering fluid and ATF are the same thing - hydraulic fluids. They both have the same viscosity and are used interchangably. The major difference is that ATF is usually dyed red and is packaged in quarts where PS fluid is usually clear and is packaged in smaller volumes. The red dye is mainly an identifier to help you identify what component is leaking fluid on your garage floor.



Flash - I have never seen yellow ATF. Are you sure you are not thinking of Dexcool, coolant? Dexron III superseded II in the mid '90's

The ATF callout for GM manual transmissions goes back to the mid '80's Camaro / Firebird that has the Borg Warner T5. They needed to protect the small needle bearings in the input shaft. The gears are plenty strong. Considering that a failure of one component is a failure of the entire unit, they spec the lube to protect the weakest link. Gearboxses fail bearings more often than they fail gears themselves.

no, i definitely saw yellowish power steering fluid - i suppose it could have been the bottle and really been more like clear - i seem to remember it was for a specific make - can't remember though if it was ford or gm - i never had a car that used it - i always used the red power steering fluid - i'll go look again



i know there were both dexron and ford atf, though i don't know what the difference was - it's been a long time since i had an automatic, so i didn't know the went from dexron 2 to 3 - i've been wokring on the same quart of atf for years now for power steering

Just called Jones Autowerks, they say use DEXRON II. I trust these guys.



Then I called the local P-car dealer, they said use ATF, any kind...



OK, now I'm REALLY confused!!!
